Hello all, 10 years ago I had an XJR6, and having recently come across a dirt cheap XJR8 decided it is time to have a bit of fun.

Only problem is a strange engine stalling issue. If I accelerate hard then lift off the throttle to coast I lose all throttle response, the revs drop to 1000rpm and the car coasts to a stop. Only then does the engine stop and 'engine stalled' comes up on the dash. Car re-starts immediately but with a bit of smoke on start up. This has happended twice in the last week but not everytime I use it. Today it managed to kick back into life whilst coasting but still with a large amount of smoke.

I've searched the forum and it seems to possibly be the throttle body or fuel pump related? Any other ideas?

Performance is fine, it feels as quick as it should!

I am planning on doing some engine mods next year but just want to run it around for now and iron out any possible issues.

You do not identify the model year but there were several technical service bulletins describing such issues on early cars. There were throttle bodies changed out, ECM's reflashed and TB connectors replaced.

Hi. It's a 97. 65k on the clock but I have no history on the car whatsoever, part of the reason it was so cheap!

 

Good advice from Ross, and welcome also...

if it's burning oil there's a few things, first off a set of compressions as the car is a nikasil unit and was prone to oil blow-by because of the cylinder lining degrading. If as you say the motor is strong I'd doubt it's an issue but you never know. Also look inside the induction tube for any signs of oil.

Usually when a car stalls the way you mention, it can be a vacuum leak, so a good look at the induction hoses is in order. More likely the TB as Ross mentions...

If there's no history with the car, start making your own with a simple service, oil and filter, plugs, air filter, belts, maybe coolant, maybe brake fluid, checking the pads and discs for wear....there's a certain satisfaction in doing this, but if you can't maybe look for a local Jag specialist to carry it out. This way you've not spent much, learnt a lot about the differences of the 6 vs the 8 and, touch wood, it'll be just as reliable!

A good clean of the throttle and part load breather is another thing you can do to as a matter of course, (there's a how to in the XK8 forum sticky) an easy way of introducing yourself to owning one of these super saloons.....

 

Any Jaguar dealer can determine from the VIN if the applicable TSB's were preformed on the car. Here is a link to similar discussion which contains the actual Service Action 514.

There are others that describe the TB connector issue but understand where you are regarding S514 first.

Meanwhile, hopefully this week I'll get a chance to have a poke around at it myself.

I'm looking forward to having a tinker with the car with some well planned out modifications so I'll start a thread on that soon but over the next few months I've got some house renovations to finish and just want to make sure the car is running fine before I start.

I'll update on this problem when I think I've got it licked.

The free updates described expired the end of '09 but should still be available and it was a world wide recall.

I pulled the electrical connections to the throttle body and all looked good. I took the intake pipe off and the edge of the flap and the housing were a bit coked up so I quickly cleaned around the flap and it's been fine since. I'll give the throttle body a proper clean when I've got more time on my hands.
