Next project... how to replace front bumper chrome wing
2000 xj8 vdp L
i have found a couple posts and answers on the web, but all are contradictory. Some I have to remove the wheels. Others just 4 bolts. Some the grille. Some say to pop out the turn signals on the cover. One said that I had to remove the hood. I am confused.
I cant see the tabs and bolts inside the bumper, that hold the wing, so I assume that the bumper cover has to be removed.
can someone please steer me in the correct position. Before I start tearing apart my front end, I want a plan of attack first.
There are 3 self tapping screws for each chrome trim holding it in place.
You have to remove the screws first then pull/slide the chrome forward (do not try to lift it up) for about 3/4 in. and its hooks will release. I replaced mine a couple of years ago so I cannot remember how exactly I did it but I think you have to remove the grill and the headlamps. then you can reach the screw heads from inside and undo them with a suitable length screwdriver.
Just a FYI for anyone that searches for this in the future...
looks like you can get to the 3 screws without removing the grill, headlights, headlight surround, etc., from under the car while on ramps.
soak them down with pb blaster and let soak for 10 minutes.
removing the items probably helped me to find them from underneath. Mine were rusted bad, and couldn’t get enough force to break them loose from above.
i had to wax my grille and headlight casings, as well as fix the plastic surrounds, anyways, so no loss
in case you can’t see the screws, I used #2 philips bit in a flexible extension on a ratchet screwdriver. They are just under the upper lip of the bumper cover. A 2” stubby would work too. I have 1.5” stubbies which were too short, it wouldn’t clear the bumper edge so went in at an angle except for the outer one
