Default No Power at Ignition Coils

  • OK, Im not an electronics guy. Never my specialty. Looking for an assist with a none starting 99 XJ8. I took the car out of storage this spring, car started right up, beautifully. Parked in the drive and the very next morning she would not start. . I finally had some time to look at the problem and traced it to the fuel pump. Perfect, pull the pump and discover the plu directly on the pump was fried and crumbling. I change the pump, repair the wiring and presto pump works. But now the engine will not fire up. So checked the fuel pressure, 42 Lbs, Great, Check the 1st and fourth pin on the coils no voltage in the on ignition on position or crank position,

Fuses 4, 5, and 10 are all good, swaped the relay out from my other car, still no change.

What am I looking for?
Any guidance is appreciated.

Have you checked the CPS? If it has failed, or is simply dirty and needs cleaning, the ECU will not complete the cycle.
Ironically I was reviewing this pdf for something else, but it'll help give you some direction.... http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Trai...20-%202000.pdf

Thanks for the reply. As it turns out it was a faulty fuse. Not blown to visually see it but none functional all the same. The cat fired right up.... Kind of. Now its throwing the P0355 error code, Ignition Coil "E" Primary/Secondary Circuit.

Now I'm trying to hunt down a chart listing which cylinder is which. I know I've seen it listed but dam if I can hunt it down now that I need it. Also have to research if P0355 is cylinder specific. Final digit refer like other codes to Cylinder 5?

1-4 on right (passenger side), and yes, it's 5.

RJ237. 1-4 on Passenger side? Sorry, but does this not refer to the B Bank which is drivers side? If Im wrong and its on the passenger side. 1-4 refers to 1 bank? 4, being the 4th cylinder back from the front?

Appreciate the reply.

I assumed you have a left hand drive 99 xj8. I-4 are on the right, or passenger side, 4 at the rear. Therefor 5 is the first cylinder on the left. If your car is RHD my directions were wrong.

No, your correct. My car is Left hand drive. But you wrote" I-4 are on the right, or passenger side, 4 at the rear. Therefor 5 is the first cylinder on the left" Am I reading this wrong? 1-4 on the right, but then you state, therefor 5 is on the left?
Please clarify for me.

Is the diagram on the right correct for my 1999 XJ8 AJ26 engine? So the Error code P0355 refers to the cylinder 5 as per the diagram? I really want to get the info I need to repair the car this weekend. High School starts next week for my two teen daughter. I have a tradition of driving them to school in the Jag that I want to continue.

The left diagram clearly states up to 2002.5. So 5 will be at the front on the drivers side.
