Default OBD 2 questions

Okay everyone i thank you all for your help in my previous endeavors on this beautiful Jag i am struggling to understand why my $500 obd2 reader refuses to auto connect key in second position as it should be and yet i cannot get it to auto connect ive tried while driving ive tried parked ive had the battery out and back in more times then i can count im getting flustered with it i had a similar issue with my 02 X-type and a cheap OBD 2 reader and when o reillys still supplied a real scan tool to troubleshoot issues now you have to bring it into them like autozone anyways i CAN however get the codes i CANNOT erase them i only get a request to do so it will read them no issue but thats it live data says its not supported on my vehicle while i drive now as to how complete this is im not sure but it is at least accurate as for which codes were being flagged now i had it in the dealership in town (NOT a jag dealer but a honda dealership) they WERE able to clear the codes why can i not??? Do i have to buy a snapon solus or something? Ill scratch my head in confusion while i eagerly await this response as im totally perplexed at this my scan tool is in working order and it is updated enough to respond flawlessly to the 2002 x-type as suggested my tool is an innova 3170RS using it on a 2001 XJR x308

I use the inexpensive ELM327 reader and connect through my iphone app. It works flawlessly, I have to clear codes on this POS almost every day! Grrrrrrr.....

understood ive corrected my post its an innova 3170RS and a XJR 2001 X308 i just feel its not the tool the tool works great on the other car i tried that too and went back to my XJR again no cigar the shop clearly had minimal if any issue clearing the codes i do have a pending a vacuum leak code P0442 could that be why it wont clear? Maybe the code is active but even then on my x type i could clear the codes

Sorry I don't know enough about the workings of both car & that OBD tool but some tools don't cope well if a car has a valid but unusual address for a module.

Check that the reader is using protocol ISO 9141-2.

It should be in the setup section of your device, or call them.

I have an Innova 3160b and it works fine on my car. The problem is more than likely what RJ said and the scanner should recognize the ISO at startup. If not, go to settigs.

ive been through this code reader many times I’ve actually never seen a setup section as you suggested is it possible to tell via the startup page shows it running
Firmware: V 18.02.02 (2018)
Boot loader: V 18.00.01
Database: V 18.03.06
copyright 2019
is it possible doing a full blown reset on my code reader will allow it to utilize the protocol you mentioned? i can run out and check the car too see if it pulls up that protocol while connected also but as its winter and very cold itll suck lol and this brings another question to mind why would it work flawlessly on my x type? Does that car not utilize the same coded protocols?

Since I never had an Innova I don't know what to say. Maybe the X type works because it's more Ford? I do know that one of my devices works fine on my jag and Maserati but not my Fiesta.

thats a good point so in that case which code reader works for you? Im tempted to find a decent used snapon at this point

I can see that, when the Jag model etc. is keyed-in, it shows what Innova 3170RS can do for that model. I thought that that would be sufficient info for your determination whether the scanner should work on your car.

My Innova is in the car, and the car is covered with snow, so it's not accessible right now. On mine, the initial startup has a menu of supported car brands and I'm assuming this is where it gets the ISO to use. I just scroll down to Jaguar and it hooks up. I get the DTCs that are supported and can clear them, and Live Data. I would have to go plug mine it to see if there's a "settings" selection along with the brand selection.

I also have an Autel MX808 that has more features and scans all of the car's modules, so I get codes from everywhere. I highly recommend this unit, but it is a little pricey.

Different tools for different folks, I guess. I have found that sometimes it's not what is displayed on the reader,
but the way it is displayed on the reader that helps various diagnostic processes.
