Default odd banging

OK. I am at my end. My 98 VP just had the ABS/Traction control lights come on. There is also a slight banging coming from the rear when in drive. I lifted the car, put it in drive and no bang, put it down and bang, bang, gets faster with speed....
I thought maybe the half shaft is hitting an exhaust pipe?
Any help is much appreciated.

Default Self Fix.... Exhaust rubbing

Well....I found my problem. The exhaust pipe that goes up and over the half shaft is rubbing on the shaft. I rigged it, but anyone help with a perm fix?

Well, Yes. Not to be a smart ***, but it is not designed to hit, so figure out what is bent or broke and fix it. Two possiblities come to mind. Either one of the hangers has broken or come loose, or you have hit something with the pipe whilst backing up. You've looked at it, we haven't.

Look on the left and right sides. The hangars are symetrical.

there's two hangers each side, one sits on top of the rear suspension, where the pipe goes up and over (the most likely) and the other is bolted up to the rear bumper mounts.

Either of these with a problem will let the rear exhaust flop about, check that the rubber isolators are there, if not replace.

Not being there, I cannot say what part has broken, but there is a rubber bushing secured to the frame with a bracket that engages a metal rod that is attached to the exhaust. The rod is about 8mm in diater, as I recall. The rod might have broken off, or more likely, the exhaust bracket has lost the rubber bushing, allowing the rod to get free. Why not go ahead and download the JTIS manual and have a look at tghe pictures? See the "Sticky notes".

Default Rear Exhaust pipe - diagram & part numbers & prices

Hi
Update - This another PDF I extracted previously from JTIS21 CD download shows the entire exhaust system:

XJ Exhaust system.pdf

Note that it looks like you might be able to remove the Support Bracket Insulator (EBC4499) that is before the Exhaust Silencer and change the rubber in its center. Also may be able to unbolt and replace the Silencer Mounting (NNG6793AA) that is after the Exhaust Silencer.

Here is a PDF file that shows the Rear Exhaust Pipe for the XJ8 I copied from the JEPC (Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog).

XJ8 Rear Exhaust pipe.pdf

It also shows the part numbers for the Mounting Rubber (Support Bracket Insulator #7 on the diagram) and the Silencer Mounting LH Rear (#6 on the diagram).

Part numbers I confirmed by looking them up on gaudin jaguar parts website.

I also show the retail and discount prices from gaudin.

Take a look at the diagram and see if these are the parts you need to replace.

If you want information about JTIS shop repair manual download then click on this weblink to go to this forum thread (Jaguar XJ8 Info) go down to post# 5:

There seems to be some confusion here. Can you not open the links Jim provided? If not, post a few more times quick! The picture shows hangers on the pipes right behind what I believe are called the rear mufflers, which are the boxes in front of the rear axle. That is well behind the cats which are at the exhaust manifolds.

Thanks again Ross.

I can't open the links that Jim provided. I have no idea why. I would love to do that so that I can see that. There are no hangers on either side rear of the mufflers. Hmmmm. Really odd, because it is factory exhaust? Both hangers are gone?

Hi X308VPpurp
Update - If you are using Internet Explorer as your default browser and you also have Firefox installed, you may be able to open the PDF files. Run Firefox instead of Internet Explorer and do not log into the forum. As a guest you will be able to open and view the files (but will not be able to create or update any posts on the forum). If you need to do any forum posts, use the Internet Explorer.

New forum member probably need at leat 8 posts before they can view the PDF and JPEG files. Your post count is now 7 posts.

That means you need to create at least one more new posting.

If that does not work then create a second new post.

You need to add to the number of posts before you can view the PDF and JPEC files. Keep on adding posts until you find that you can view the files.
