I've been constantly battling an ever falling overhead console & today I noticed that the tangs that hold it are not even, is this by design or is it the cause of my grief. This damn console always drops when I'm feeling rather proud of my clean smooth running machine as if it intends to keep me humble lol.
Your metal tangs aren't so much your issue as you properly inserting them into your plastic mounts in your council I believe.
You place the mounts inline with the tangs, just a bit back so the tangs slide down into the mounts as you push forward. You should have to put some upward pressure as you do so and hear/feel the tangs lock under the mounts.
I included a shot of the mounting screw to be sure you have the correct one.
The screw is always properly torqued so far by me,my audio shop & body shop it always fails. I've bought a new screw w/ the same results. It always falls from the tang end, some times w/ the screw side still holding.
There's no torque on mine, its simply press up on the council and 1/4 turn to lock it. It probably shouldn't be called a screw to much as a holding post.
Are you getting the tangs into the mounts? For it to fall, you can't have unless the mounts are broke?

Yes they are fully inserted & mounts are whole, it holds for a few weeks @ a time. Usually falls w/ road bumps etc. I'm going try bending one of the tangs until they're uniform & see what happens.

Looking at your picture, it seems that the left tang has been bent open a bit. I suggest you bend it back to match the right one that looks good. Then, position both tangs in their roof panel slots so that they sit about 5 mm back in relation to their current position/engagement and this should solve your problem. As the tangs are currently sitting, the "hooks" are probably too much forwards so the slots of the console do not engage much onto the tangs. This and the left tang bent downwards, were most probably the reasons for the console popping out.
In all the vehicles I've owned this is one of the most curious designs for an overhead console I've seen lol.
Edit :
Just wrapped the left tang in tape to add bulk, it catches & holds fine. The other tang refuses to hold & even has some play where it attaches to the chassis. Something so trivial is made into an ordeal lol.
