+1 on that. It is the tool needed. The car has one hidden somewhere if a previous owner or mechanic hasn't tossed it. On my XJ8 it was inserted in a fitting under and near the throttle body on the drivers side.
On my XK8 it was just left in the part load breather fitting.
The purpose of the tool is to push the outer straps outward to release the fitting. You can carefully use needle nose pliers inserted and then spread to press the straps. The tool is best.

Also.. an easy solution .. in a pinch..
insert 2 small jeweler style screwdrivers (medium size 1/8" size) in between double plastic rings, one on each side opposite each other, then "squeeze" the handles together, allowing round rod of screwdriver to bear pressure outward on the binding ring...
Takes a bit of practice, but works every time for me.
( Seen for sale in 99cent stores, Jeweler style screwdriver sets of 4-5 )
