Default Pull the engine or transmission ?

Huge oil leak between engine and trasmission. No oil on engine pan,, Definitely engine as its loosing oil fast. Rear Main Seal and or notorious Main Galley Oil Plug?

Now, given that this will be done in a home driveway or garage without a Lift,, but using axle stands or ramps only would you pull the engine or the transmission?

The transmission. Much less chance of causing damage to hoses, wiring, etc. Get an inexpensive transmission jack from Harbor Freight, but be aware that you will need a lot of ground clearance.

To solve the same problem, I recently removed the transmission (MB gearbox, SC engine) with the car on abt. 18 in. axle stands and using a transmission jack Not really too difficult but needs time and patience. Once I disconnected the gearbox, I kept it under the car and just rolled it towards the back. The leak was from the gallery plug (it was almost finger tight) but I also replaced the rear crank seal (bought the special tool for this).

I paid my tech, this past summer, the $700 to do this operation since I didn't have the lift to get it there. Both galley and main seal were replaced and should be, you don't want to go back in there again.

Having replaced dozens of rear main seals and that 17mm Allen galley plug seal my advice before you start on it is the night before to spray P’Blaster on the exhaust manifold nuts and the muffler clamps and nuts just before the axle and let it sit overnight before starting on it. If you can get those fasteners off at the top of the catalytic converters without breaking them, that’ll save you a lot more work of drilling out the broken studs and chasing the threads. Use anti seize on the studs before going back up with the cats. Also, if you have a check engine light on with an oxygen sensor code, nows the perfect time to replace it while it’s all out.

In regards to what Addicted posted, review my thread on O2's. It includes removal of the catalytic's and those studs he speaks of not breaking.

Thank you for your input guys.

Could someone help me with the part numbers for the sealing washer for the galley plug?

I've ordered and recieved the rear main seal (AJ83744) and the galley sealing washer (JWV130001). but, the washer i've received is a fiber washer with a 16mm inner dia. and no part number on the bag

The engine rebuld 168 doc shows the plug to be M20? So I expected a copper crush with 20mm inside dia?

Have I ordered the wrong part ?

JWV130001 is the correct part number but you have been sent a wrong part. The washer is not a copper crush washer but a composite (bonded) washer, like these:

You should be able to find one in hardware, hydraulic parts or oil seals shops.

Thank you. That looks more like it. I've ordered from another vendor. Appreciate the help.
