Hi Eric, yes...still love my XJR.

I got a company car at the end of August so my poor XJR only gets driven a few times a month now. My E30 gets driven "maybe" once a month. I love my job but I put in a lot of hours. I feel like I should sell something but I just don't want to part with either car.

My wife's 2004 XJ8 is for sale though, if you know anyone who's interested. For the right price the E30 is for sale, too. Not really interested in selling the XJR though.

 

Well mission aborted, I found the seller more & more evasive, add in a smug factor & it equates to a scenario I'd rather not be a part of.

No that's different, previous was an '01.

 

Looks more than half decent on the pictures, perhaps the outside better than the interior.
A lot can be restored with some days cleaning and detailing as long as the base is ok.

But the woodwork seems to be a mess, perhaps it is the light or the picture quality, but it might indicate the car has been outside a lot.

Oh jah, it seems to miss the front splitter, and the rear cigarette lighter.

 

At this point in my X308 ownership tenure I'm not spending over a certain # on vehicles beyond 50K mileage &/or w/ non-upgraded tensioners. NC is a certain hot bed for these cars, so there's always gems popping up.

 

A careless individual with a revoked drivers license and a 1998 Oldsmobile decided to turn directly in front of me as I was traveling 55 mph down the highway to pick up my daughter. There was a State Trooper in an unmarked car traveling behind me (which I didn't know until after the accident) who got a front row seat to the whole thing. He told me I was not speeding and that there was absolutely no way I could have avoided the accident. Some things just happen TO you, and there's nothing you can do. Oh well, the air bags worked and I hit a car going at least 50 mph (hit the brakes for a fraction of a second before impact) and got out without a scratch. Yay Jaguar! Praise God!

I started this thread on 3-24-2016 and the car was assaulted by an Oldsmobile on 3-2-2017. Almost a one year adventure.

I am car shopping again but I don't know if you guys have the energy or interest for me to live it all out online again! haha. But, I fully intend to replace her, and this time I'm going to spend a little more so that there is little or nothing for me to do when I buy it than drive it.

2002 to 2003 XJR (maybe earlier years if timing gear replacement can be proven) in "always garaged" condition. Color options in order of preference:
1) British Racing Green
2) Carnival Red
3) Onyx White
4) Anthracite

Interior has to be oatmeal, I love the oatmeal interior.

To be honest the maintenance records and condition of the car are FAR more important factors than the exterior color.

It will cost you a lot more to buy a new car than it will cost me to follow your adventures, and the pleasure and my satisfaction will not be much less if you will finally find the right one ...which I am sure you will, if you can just have patients till the right opportunity comes along.

I'm sorry for your loss. That's a fine XJR and it's almost identical to mine, except for the interior. I can also see how clean the car is even after the accident. Well, I would love to sell my car to someone who can really take care of it like you but my interior's black, not oatmeal like yours. But don't get me wrong I love this car just that the MPG is killing me. I still believe the x308 is the only remaining sedan that has this low roof line, and true to the past XJ design, still love looking at it when I come to drive it. Good luck on your Jaguar hunting.

 

In my searching there are a LOT of the exact same cars listed that were there a year ago. Either they are crappy cars that they won't lower the price on, or they just don't really want to sell them; they just want people to call up and tell them how pretty their car is. haha

 

I think I know how to decipher this engine number, but I would like someone more knowledgable to interpret it and tell me if I am right.

Right, so that's after the magic 8-13-2001 date and so therefore an engine with metal timing gear from the factory, correct?

 

I'm not sure of that timeline. I know there are several post with the date of the upgrade. And there is second and third generation.

 

If the last 6 of the vin is F41862 and beyond, then your safe. This is of course if your looking at another XJR.

 

Ok, looked at 3 cars today:

Sitting in a coffee shop deciding what to do. Any input appreciated.

Car 1: 2003 BRG XJR 145,000 miles asking $6,000 but negotiable. Nice shine on paint but lots of dings and scratches. Drives really nice but fuel trims are high and ASC / Traction light and low coolant light on. (Coolant level is fine). It's a fixer upper, I don't really want another fixer upper.

Car 2: 2003 Anthracite XJR with upgraded wheels and brembo brake package. Mint condition paint and interior, this thing looks like a brand new car. 92,000 miles. Asking $11,500 and won't budge. Only detractor is brakes shimmy when pressed more than about 25% force. Also, this was bought by a car buff and his mechanic to flip so no real service record, but it shows great.

Car 3: 2002 Onyx white XJR with engine built after 8-13-2001. 98,000 miles. One accident on carfax but it was minor and the repair was impeccable. This owner bought it from the first owner 6 years ago with 34,000 miles on it and has had it garaged since. Extensive service records. Pretty good fuel trims and basically drives nice. Drivers seat is in bad shape, it needs 2 tires and it needs all brakes done. Asking $8,995.

Any feedback?

I am in Atlanta. Bought the white one. Headed back to North Carolina in my new XJR.

 

Very hard to say without seeing them, but from what you describe I can add the following:

- Always garaged is a big pro, saying from experience.
Plastics, wood veneer, leather, clear coat etc. are in a much better, and less brittle shape if the car has been kept out of the sun.

- I always think the car's history and treatment can be read from the little things.
How did an owner take car of other things if he did not take care of a broken car seat, something which catches the eye each and every time you step in?
It says something about the owner, and that says something about how the car was driven and maintained.

To me it sounds the 2nd car is the one to concentrate on.
Although its got no service records, perhaps you can learn a bit more from a very detailed inspection.
If something like a serpentine belt looks new, bolts are not rounded, engine bay is clean, chances are that she was also taken care of mechanically.

 

The service records on the white car were overwhelming, and other than the driver seat it is beautiful. New Jaguar fuel pumps just recently ($1,237 receipt). Both of the others had been reset recently, possibly to clear codes? This one has good fuel trims and P1111 on the scanner.
