A Question on Restricted Performance (*Some Conjecture Required*)
UPDATE
Well, the RP bug has NOT returned; last time I saw one was almost 2 weeks ago. No 0354 or 0304. I've refilled the tank for the 2nd time since I bought the car and put in HEET each time to help w/ getting out the water that I suspect was in the tank. Before the last refill, I got the tank down to "E" and actually a few miles past where the range went to zero. I was also able to completely fill the tank for the first time w/out having to manipulate the nozzle at all; not sure if that's a function of the way the nozzle sat or a different gas station I visited.
The car runs very well and I'm getting progressively better mileage with each tank. With mixed highway/local driving, my last tank was just under 20mpg. I'm hoping that continues to improve a bit but it's far better than the <16mpg I had in the first tank I filled w/ similar driving conditions.
I also had a TRUSTED person check out the car for me and found that the tensioners have been done, which was a big relief. We are setting up some time in the near future to take care of a couple of niggling issues (engine mounts, alignment to start), but my cautious optimism has turned slightly to mild confidence in the condition of my new car.
Just thought I'd provide some good news, as most of the posts (understandably!) have to do with car trouble.

As I said above -- it's very intermittent on most cars. You can go months without an issue ... it can come back ... and go away.
Diving the car could have given more life to the battery ... but, bad fuel is going to present itself differently. If you get back after it sits a bit -- replace the battery.

'01 XJ8, 58k miles. Recently bought from a used car dealer, and having perused these boards I expected some issues to arise. The car has likely been sitting a lot over the last several months; only about 600 miles since Oct '18 and I'm guessing a decent chunk of that was being driven from Georgetown, TX to Houston area. The car runs well. The car is at a (thankfully very close by) Jag dealership for a once-over. My question will require conjecture on your part b/c I'm impatient and don't really want to wait for the service dept. to get back to me, hopefully tomorrow
So the situation:
1) RP after a 10-15 minute neighborhood drive, just after I put the car in park. No CEL. Engine started to knock in conjunction with the RP light. Shut off engine for a few minutes; I was at my destination anyway. When turned back on, engine purred to life and drove home just fine.
2) A few days (and uneventful trips) later (today), RP after 10 minute drive to dealer service dept (I made appt for them a few days earlier to give her the complimentary multi point inspection and check brakes), again just after I put the car in park. This time no audible engine knocking. No CEL.
Before anyone asks, I have no codes b/c my OBD2 will be arriving tomorrow. So the Jag sits at the dealer waiting for a diagnostician to check her out tomorrow. Evidently, none of the techs there today are too experienced w/ XJ8. This doesn't inspire me w/ confidence, but the advisor seemed to trust his "ringer" to diagnose her.
My question is: Based on your combined experience and knowledge w/ RP and w/out knowing any codes, what would you think is the likeliest cause of said RPs? The keys to me are 1) that RPs have only occurred upon shifting into park; 2) the knocking sound that went along w/ the first RP; and 3) the car sitting for what has perhaps been many months with the same tank of gas.
One final note: I washed her on the first night of ownership; thankfully my daughter checked under the gas flap afterwards and we found the reservoir filled with water. Gas cap was tightly sealed. I put some weed wacker line down into the drain hole and it quickly cleared up (thanks to the forum for that suggestion). The RPs occurred after said dousing, but I'm wondering if cap is completely watertight as well as airtight, as the water level was up at least close to where the cap meets the neck.
Thank you in advance for any conjecture you can muster. The help so many of you provide is really informative and educational!

Do not drive the car if the ABS warning message comes on and see if there were any past ABS Not Available Messages.
You can also get an ABS warning w/o having other items affected ... it also will show the traction off as it uses the ABS for control. This can often be the board in the pump .. again ... often a very intermittent problem.
About 1/2 the time I take my garage queen out ........40k -- I get the ABS. Dive it a while and it never comes back ... until it sits in the garage.

Hes lucky to find that car with such low mileage, but now would be the perfect time to change the tranny fluid and check the pan and fluid color. Assuming that model has the ZF 5 HP24 tranny only refill with Pentosin ATF-1 = OEM full Synthetic LifeGaurd5 but cheaper because its a secret. Shh.
Same RP (0354 w/ occasional 0304) popped a couple of times yesterday, so I swapped out the cylinder 4 coil for a nice shiny new one. Car ran great on a couple of short (15-minute) runs in the local area. I had the radio off and windows down to really listen to the engine, and the idle sound in particular was much more smooth. More of a purr than a rumble...I'll wait and see if the coil was indeed the culprit. I did also put some Lucas fuel treatment in this morning...
It's two weeks after the Ignition Coil replacement, and all is well to this point. Looking back, it seems that perhaps 1) bad/stale gas caused problems w/ the fuel/air mixture, leading to misfires on Cylinder 4, especially as my gas tank got closer to empty; 2) addition of HEET and StaBil (thanks Carnival Kid for the suggestions) to gas tank on each re-fill seemed to lessen the RP occurrence, but it did still occur; and 3) replacement of the ignition coil seems to have solved the RP problem for now. I have also had the fuel filter replaced (thanks to another trusted forum member for handling that!), so any lingering water in the system should be cleared out.
Of course, it could have simply been that the ignition coil failed on its own and was the sole cause of my RP problem (and not bad/stale gas), but I hope at least this thread has provided/will provide help to someone in similar circumstances to explore some different possibilities.

On the other hand, code P0304 means that a misfire has been detected which, if only this code is displayed, can be due to many things like:
Cylinder compression low
Worn camshaft / broken valve spring(s)
Fuel delivery pressure (low / high)
Fuel injector(s) blocked / leaking
Fuel injector(s) continuously open
Fuel contamination
Fuel injector circuit fault(s)
(Injector DTCs also flagged)
Spark plug failure / fouled / incorrect gap
ECM to ignition module primary circuit fault
(Cylinder misfire detected DTC also flagged)
Ignition module ground circuit:
open circuit, high resistance
Ignition module / coil failure
So, it appears that, if you get P0354 (accompanied by P0304 or not), it is most likely the ignition coil failure.
