Default Shifter won't move from park

99 xj8 won't shift from park. Had a blown fuse and after replacing it, next day same thing. What is wrong?

Sounds like you have a bad earth somewhere effecting the shift lock solenoid. Have a look at the wiring diagrams - I'll see if I can dig a lnk out for download, incidentally, which fuse has blown? and does it keep blowing?

had this with my xjr, it was the brake light switch. check your brake lights are working. took my switch apart and resoldered the joints and it has been working alright since. mind you having said that it may have tempted fate.

We checked brake lights and I can hear the solenoid clock when I change the fuses last night. Now the fuse is blown again. What could this be!?

From the sounds of it you have a short somewhere in that circuit.

Start by examining the the rear light clusters for signs of verdigris, that's the green stuff caused by water ingress.

Next is to get into the brake pedal switch. Check that the wiring is in good condition.

Finally, check the solenoid wiring.

My money would be on the brake pedal switch.

Hope this helps,

I wouild measure the circuit resistance to ground with an ohmmeter, then apply Ohms law to see if ithe resistance is less than the fuse current. Assuming the fuse is 5 amps, 12/5= 2.4 ohms, so you are looking for a resistance less than 2.4 ohms, either across the solenoid, or from the circuit wire to ground (with the fuse removed to isolate the circuit).

I know with the fuse in I can move the shifter knob and the beep beep thing works. I did spray the brake switch this am with electrical contact cleaner so it may have blown the fuse when I did that.
