just got a present from a friend,
an XJ8, X308, 4.0,1998 year. 80 miles on the dash.
But with some strange issue for me with accelerating, I think it`s a problem but maybe you will may tell me it`s ok, or if it`s not, please let me know where to start searching the repair.
attached two video`s from today:
That instant burst sound from the throttlebody is nothing but air going past the butterfly. That is normal. If the car was any like Peuqeot or Citroen from the same age the whole question would be useless..
Saw your issue on Facebook: To me, it sounds as if you have excess play in the accelerator cable (where your hand is in the second video); might also clean the MAF, throttle bore and plate, and run a good fuel system through a tank of gas. Also a new fuel filter.
Jhartz
I change already the fuel pump and filter and clear the tank. also minimize and short the acc. cable to zero so it`s tight but not raising the RPM at idle stays 800.
Will spray tomorow the MAF with carburator spray and change the gasket of the TB.
any suggestion how to check with multimeter the TPS? maybe some thread from past?
Thank you in advane, without you and the forum i dont have any chance.
I know it’s been a few days but, are both of these videos ones you made? The reason I ask is because you said your car is a 98’. A 98’ is an AJ26 engine. That video shows a later AJ27 engine. It’s important to know what year car you have because they don’t have many interchangeable engine management sensors between the AJ26 and AJ27.
If you had a bad tps, you’d have a check engine light on and you’d have a “restricted performance” readout on your instrument cluster.
This style MAF sensor is from an AJ27 engine. It just has 2 screws to remove and clean like Jhartz recommended.
On the far left side is a cam cover VVT. That’s an AJ27. The AJ26 (non supercharged) has a VVT on the upper timing cover on bank 1 & bank 2. The supercharged 26/27 engine doesn’t have a VVT at all. On the lower right is a 4 wire ignition coil from an AJ27 engine. The AJ26 has a 2 wire ignition coil.
Not sure if still needed..
What are the fueltrims on OBD2?
Sounds like lean mixture causing the drop, while it should scale up with a touch of throttle.
Could be MAF, or TPS needs adjustment?
Can you tell us what your friend had done to the engine when he gave you the car? Just need a bit more background information on when this situation occurred.
Do you have a scan tool so you can read data from the engine sensors?
