Would some one please tell me if a 2004 XJ8 transmission will fit my 98 XJ8 VDP. and maybe fill me in as to what years and models will fit my 98. The vin on the 2004 is SAJWA71C345G25371. It looks like a good buy 34k miles if it fits at around $1000.00 off of e-bay.

You need a ZF5HP24 and the 2004 XJ has a ZF6HP26 (not even close). There is even the discussion of the AJ26 versus the AJ27 gearbox compatibility but I think jagtechohio has installed a gearbox from an older to a newer or the other way around and the transmission worked properly. The TCM for the 5HP24 is external but the 6HP26 is INTERNAL so it is totally incompatible.

There are several on ebay ranging from rebuilds ~$2000 down to used at ~$500.

How about a 97 XK8 transmission, do they use a ZF5HP24 in the 4.0 cars.
The owner does not know what type it is.

The XK8 was fitted with the ZF5HP24 until 2001 I think when it was changed to a completely different box so it should be OK.
