Default Stuck in park, many errors

Hi all - I was removing center console dash and had to move shifter to drive position. Left key on. After about 5 minutes the message panel started cycling through error messages e.g. low brake fluid, gearbox fault, restricted mode. and car is locked in Park.

Removed key, then turned key on. Car chirps a few times displays Er on center console and the messages start cycling again. Disconnected battery, no effect.

I didn't mess with anything other than to pull out the climate and audio heads (but not disconnect). Was not doing any electrical stuff when the problem started. Did leaving the key on with the shifter in Drive screw something up?

Thanks in advance

2001 XJR

1. Needs a hard reset.

Might be preaching to the converted, but to do this, it's hold the neg- battery cable to the pos+ post for 20 seconds.

2. Gearbox adjustment is slightly out, you may have to re adjust to the sweet spot - this is done by two nuts on the side of the gearbox shifter mech. It might only need a bump to knock it out of sinc.

Default Hard reset didn't work

I tried the reset explained here but still have the same problem: turn key on, car chirps 5 times, the word "Er" displayed on the climate control panel. Message panel in instrument cluster cycles through messages including "Low Brake Fluid, Gearbox Fault, restricted mode, Incorrect Part fitted" and maybe one or two others.

This is getting scary. Please help.

BTW engine starts, haven't driven it (on jacks) but tachometer does not work.

All I did was turn key on, move shfter to drive in order to make room for center climate and audio reinstallation. While I was doing the reinstallation all of this started. Did not disconnect any electronics.

Thanks

Default More info

Sorry to keep posting to my own thread but here's exactly what I see when I turn the key on.

10 beeps
Climate control display = "Er"
Messages on instrument cluster: Low Brake Fluid, Failsafe Engine Mode, Gearbox Fault, Asc Not Available. These repeat continuously. The CEL, ABS and Brake warning lights are on.

The brake lights work.

The car starts.

The shifter is locked in Drive. If I manually release the shifter, changing gears does shift the transmission.

The Tachometer does not work but the fuel and temp gauges do.

The Climate control and Audio heads work.

Why were you removing the center console?

Rattle removal. The climate control head has broken brackets.

Is it possible that you might have pinched a wire or pulled a connector apart?

Gus,

It's possible but I checked them a couple times. Nothing obvious but maybe one broke in the loom. BTW - the code I get is for CAN Bus failure but everything else works.

I saw a post on the UK forum regarding a body processor module fuse. I'll give it try tomorrow. What do you think?

Thanks

check the fifteen amp fuse in the driver side rear passenger fuse box for the body control module. it controls the lock on the shifter.

First check the inertia switch. Then Would measure the resistance on the CAN bus between the instrument cluster and (iirc) the gearbox selector.

Thanks for all of the advice so far everyone. I've checked the fuses, all OK. Trying to recall exactly what I was doing. I might have twisted the climate control head around. There's a wiring harness that doesn't seem to have a connector and there's very little play in it. It's on the bottom left rear of the head. Is there something in that bunch of wires that could fault if broken?

Default Some progress

Ok, I have a broken connector going to the circuit board under the J-gate. At this point it's completely separated. Can anyone give me some info on this connector? It looks like the wires have a bayonet clip into it but is it a pin type that solders to the board?

Thanks

It **might** be easier to just find a complete used shifter on FleaBay. I never have any luck finding exact replacements for specialized connectors.

Hi
I am not sure that this will help, but here is a J-Gate component parts diagram from the JEPC (Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalog):

Name: XJJ-Gatecomponentpartsdiagram.jpg

Name: XJJ-Gatecomponentpartsdiagramlist.jpg

If you find the part on this diagram, give me the reference number and I will be able to give you the part number.

Hi Sean B
Most of these components are the same for the XJ8 and XJR with these exceptions:
Reference #
20 Sliding Block - has a different part number for XJ8 and XJR
22 Mounting plate - is for XJR only
27 Linear Switch - is for XJR only
23 Mounting plate - is for XJ8 only
24 Connector bracket - is for XJ8 only

That is my findings after looking at all the information on the JEPC.
