Default Knock Sensor from Amazon

Thanks to all for the information.

When I looked at the knock sensor on Amazon and put in my car's information, it says it will not fit my car? Is it just a matter of something like a longer wire?

The price is much better than any others I have seen so would love to buy from Amazon if assured it will fit.

Thanks,
Gary

I used the one you're talking about and it does have a longer wire -- that's definitely not a problem, there's plenty of room to "store" the extra wire. In fact, I didn't do anything to deal with the longer wire and it's just fine.

I had a heck of a time convincing myself that the $35 one was right for my car (03 XJ8) because when I would search for the one that was supposed to work on my car, I would find ones that were over $100. I decided to remove the old one and compare it to the photo of the $35 one and was then convinced it would work -- and it does!

Good luck with the project. It's a bit tedious, but if you take your time it'll all work out.

I looked up both the 2005 (X350) and AJ27 (X308) 2002 year on Rock Auto website

2005 - STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS KS305 (AJ85676) Harness Length - mm: 460 (13.5 inches) $19.40

2002 - STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS KS309 (LNE1692AA) Harness Length - mm: 340 (12.75 inches) $69.89

The 2005 is just 0.75 inches longer.

To add to the knowledge pool, my 98 XJR (AJ26 engine) has the old style, seen here today.

The resistance is 560 kOHM on both. I'd hate to have to replace one on the XJR, it is really buried under the supercharger.

According to RockAuto, my 2000 XJ8 would use the Standard Motor Products KS308 (screw in type with no wire shown in the picture) or an Airtex/Wells 5S5622 (which has the donut shape and wire connector). I don't understand how the 2 very different parts could be interchangeable.

If the KS305 at $19.40 will work on my car, I'm all for using it. If not sure, I will go for the Amazon part for $35.

Thanks for all advice and help.

Look at this X308 engine sensors parts list on Jaguar Classic Parts UK:

Engine Sensors-V8 - Parts For XJ Series from (V)812317 to (V)F59525 (X308) | Jaguar Classic Parts UK

See #6 on the diagram is knock sensor (screw-in) for 1997 and 1998 AJ26 Engines
Also has #9 on diagram for knock sensor (doughnut) for 1999 thru 2003 AJ27 Engines.

Yours 2000 XJ8 has an A27 Engine and uses the dougnut type of knock sensor.

The whole purpose of this thread on Knock sensors was to show Jaguar owners with AJ27 Engines that they could replace the existing sensor with the AJ33 (same doughnut type) but has 3/4 inch longer harness (2004 thru 2007).

So bottom line I think you are saying the KS305 sensor will work for my car...correct?

I love the price of $19.40, but cannot understand the big variations in price if the only difference is the wire length.

Thanks,
Gary

I personally would buy the one on Amazon - W0133-1655837 for $35 and free shipping.
It is the same part number that DavidN recommended and other forum members do not seem to have any issues with it.

DavidN comments: Both knock sensors are made by DENSO to Jaguar specifications.
I changed both knock sensors with the "cheaper" ones I mentioned above, use them now since half a Year without any problems.

Comment from forum member meaculpa (5/9/2011): I've been running with the ones suggested by Dave for almost three months now...so far, NO PROBLEMS!
Also from forum member jaidank (5/9/2011): Fitted cheaper AJ85676 in June. No fault codes or knocking since.

Forum member Brutal suggests that the knock sensor Specified torque is more important: "spec'd" torque gives the required sensitivity, more/less torque = more/less sensitivity

Amazon shows it is exact fit for 2004 thru 2007 4.2 engine (AJ33).
It is exactly the same knock sensor except it is longer than the 1999 thru 2003 4.0 engine (AJ27).

The possible differences in the different knock sensors would be the mechanical filtering. That means the knock sensors are designed to be more sensitive to one range of frequencies that to another. Since I doubt the later Jaguar engines had a substantially different set of characteristic frequencies from my AJ27 whilst knocking, I decided to go ahead with the cheaper ones also. Physically the sensor itself looked exactly the same. However, as was noted, you are taking some risk in that they MIGHT have some difference in sensitivity.

On july 27 I purchase from amazon the part DavidN suggested and it worked great. Did away with my check engine light (after I deleted the codes with my code reader) and did away with restricted performance alert.

It was only like $35.00 and arrived 3 days free shipping. 135.00 at jag dealership. same part number.
Easy to install per DavidN instructions and great photos. thank heaps.

How to change a Knock Sensor on a Jaguar AJ27 Engine

One of the common problems of the Jaguar V8 engines is knock sensor failure.
A faulty knock sensor will set the ignition timing in full retard and you'll get only a weak performance.
The failure is accompanied by the amber warning light and a DTC Message "Restricted Performance".
A knock sensor failure has not to be a permanent problem. Intermittent failure is common, but still the sensor has to be changed to get rid of the problem.

To verify if the problem is indeed a knock sensor failure and to check whether it is Bank 1 (right side of the car) or Bank 2 (left side of the car) you'll have to get the OBD codes read out.

The codes are as follows:

P0325 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)
P0326 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)
P0327 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Low Input (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)
P0328 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit High Input (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)
P0329 Knock Sensor 1 Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1 or Single Sensor)

P0330 Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2)
P0331 Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Range/Performance (Bank 2)
P0332 Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Low Input (Bank 2)
P0333 Knock Sensor 2 Circuit High Input (Bank 2)
P0334 Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Intermittent (Bank 2)

There are two knock sensors located on top of the Engine, approximately in the middle of the 4 cylinders at each bank.
To get access to the sensors the black plastic engine cover with the "Jaguar V8" imprinted on has to be removed.

There are two types of knock sensors.
The "old" ones that are of a "screw-in barrel type" and the newer ones that are just bolted on.

I describe the replacement of the bolt-on type knock sensor on Bank 2 in the following documentation on a 1999 XJ8 AJ27 engine.

Be careful!
Knock sensors are piezo electric devices that are very sensitive! If dropped, over-torqued or struck they will probably be destroyed.
As knock sensors are sensitive to a sudden temperature change they are also easily fractured by steam blasting a hot engine.
So handle the knock sensors with great care and let the engine always cool before fitting a new sensor!

Here's my How-To-Write-up...

That's where we start...

Remove the black plastic engine cover.
(It is just clipped on so just unclip the two black plastic hoses on top of the cover, bent them slightly away, and pull the cover off.)

In here's the left-hand-side knock sensor hidden...

Unplug the electrical connector of the knock sensor located at the side of the black plastic thermostat housing.

Remove the connector from the retainer clip.
(To not break the connector use a small bent tool to push the latch of the connector back and slide the connector downwards and off it's retainer clip.)

Here's my "tool" and a close-up of the connector:

"Special tool" in use...

Loosen the 13mm screw nut that holds the knock sensor.

Fill a 13mm wrench socket with grease to hold the nut in the wrench socket.

Remove the screw nut and carefully lift the wrench with the nut "glued" into it up.

Here is Post 2:

...
Get yourself two pieces of wire and bent one side into a small U-hook.

Use one U-Hook to pull up the knock sensor and with the second wire carefully guide the attached cable and it's connector out.

Here's the defective knock sensor vs a new one.

(I ordered the new ones with www.autopartswarehouse.com, Item No W0133-1655837, $27.95 free shipping to the US.
They are for a XKR but fit theXJ8 as well. Only difference is that the cable is a few inches longer than the one of the original sensor, but there is enough room to tuck it away nicely.)

Use some WD40 and a paint brush to clean the surface on which the knock sensor was/will be mounted.

Insert the connector and the wire, guide it with the U-Hook-wire towards the front and lower the knock sensor onto the bolt.

To insert the new knock sensor use the shaft of a wooden spoon (or something similar) to hold and guide the knock sensor into position.

Hold the knock sensor in place with a large screwdriver and carefully remove the wooden shaft.

Slide the connector onto the retainer clip and connect it to the harness.

Grab the wrench socket with the 13mm nut still "glued" in and carefully guide the nut onto the bolt.

Tighten the nut to hand-tight. (Torque = 20Nm or 14 lb/ft, thanks to "xjrguy" for the torque data!).

Replace the engine cover and you are done!

It took me about 15 Minutes per side but I have been there before.
(As my first DTC appeared I interchanged the knock sensors just to be sure that the knock sensor was the culprit and not some bad wiring/contact.)

Good Luck!

David

P.S.
To follow that write up is completely on your own risk!
If some damage occurs following that write-up I'm in no way responsible!

Note to translator:
I do not know what is wrong with my mediafire - the folder that has the photos that DavidN provided. Apparently there is some kind serious download issue on these photos using the links from mediafire.
I delete the folder. I uploaded all the photos a folder (DaidN photo of How to changeknock sensor) to my account on www.photobucket.com.

You don't need a bent screwdriver to remove the connectors. If you have nimble fingers, it'l possible to reach under and push the little lever and it just slides off.

Has anyone tried refurbishing these things? It seems the failure mode is degradation of the insulation due to heat and, in my case, sitting in a puddle of coolant. I suspect 20c of wire and a bit of solder and maybe some silicon and all would be good again.

Edit: Probably better to crimp, not solder.

Thanks! That cured my P0332 Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Low Input (Bank 2). I used an Autozone SU7012, which was in stock, and only $29. The wire was a couple inches longer, but there is plenty of room for it.

Default Knock sensor prices going through the roof!

So after reading through all the excellent information on this two-page instructional for trouble-shooting and replacing our knock sensors, I started looking on Ebay, there was only one $30 W0133-1655837 sensor which sold while I was browsing. So I hit the internet and purchased one W0133-1655837 through the suggested Auto Parts Warehouse - they refunded me because they "became" after my purchase "out of stock".

I looked up the Amazon listing - the item now being sold was $127+.

I finally looked up the $28.99 Duralast SU7012 from Autozone - LAST ONE available in Palm Beach County from Autozone at stated price - even the counter clerk stated that was a "great price" for knock sensors.

So, I have one, I'm glad, and that will hopefully get the "restricted performance" sent to the netherworlds (scan said that was the issue).

Thanks again for all the great info, as usual.
