I have the 1998 XJ8. I haven't removed my covers, but are mine the screw in type? If so, I got a bank 2 code but are they (sensors) the same for both bank 1 and 2?

I understand this is a posting about replacing a knock sensor on a V8 Jaguar I own a 2.5 X-type and I have the code showing P0332 knock sensor 2 circuit low input ( bank 2 ) okay so according to my Innova 3150d super dupa code reader well I think its good it shows me everything I should need to know My Snap on code reading system and the Snap on system cost alot more, anyhow back to my question I have this knock sensor code showing so I contacted my friendly Oreilly's store website and got two showing one at over $100.00 and one at around $30.00 I copied the image but I cant get it to show my problem is what makes the terrible difference in price, bear in mind I am problem searching much the way mechanics seem to do when I take my car in they put different new parts on and charge me for everypart., I am trying to decide if my knock sensor problem would be causing my vehicle being in limp mode I may have a lifetime of auto mechanical repairs but so much happened since I retired in 1998 cars are so dependant on the onboard computors and code readers can only go so far.
I dont know if there is a difference between the $100.00 and the $30.00 knock sensor but as involved as I understand it is a difficult job to do I am almost convinced to get the expensive one but lets face it parts are parts and should be built to a certain standard. I dont know what to do.

 

I used the $29 Duralast SU7012 from Autozone in my XJ8 w/ no problems.

that's what I want to do as I said all components have to be manufactured to a certain standard. Thats what I will be doing I just seem to have a problem with the online ordering on A.Z. Oreillys etc they keep sending me to chevy truck parts and ford truck parts.

 

Mine ended up being a Code "M" for a mouse had chewed up the wire. Repaired the wire and code went away. Sensor was fine.

Any help appreciated. Are the aftermarket ones OK and what about aftermarket cool brands?

As per KC I used the Duralast SU7012 for $29.00 and have had no problems.

That was 6 months ago, but I have to admit I cannot find it for that price anywhere today. Autozone is asking $115.00 now.

@jimlombardi and others -- know this is a simple question: the post is great and the pics extremely helpful. However, I cannot seem to disconnect the knock sensor connector from the mounting bracket (what the workshop manual page 1252 calls it) -- which Jim refers to as the "retainer clip".

I can't seem to get the special tool -- or any tool - to let it release. Any tips on how I can remove it from the mounting bracket.

The new KS has two small "claws" on the back that appear to hold it to the mounting clip.

Many thanks in advance for any tips anyone can lend. This appears to be a very easy replacement - except I can't get the clip off the bracket. Thanks.

 

The flexible "blade" needs to be levered towards the thermostat tower.


Using your fingernail or small screwdriver lever the blade while at the same time pressing down on the connector.

As with many automotive clips they can sometimes be very non-intuitive, and this one is even less intuitive than most!

If you check your new knock sensor you will see that there is a "flexible blade" that when moved will release the connector from the clip on the thermostat tower. Trouble is the designers made sure that the blade is hidden, and hard to get at too!

You have to either use your fingernail, or a small, short screwdriver, to get under the clip, and gently leverage the blade towards the thermostat tower, and at the same time press down on the connector.

My pics show the old plastic thermostat tower, which, if you still have that type, you should replace with the metal variant.

When I replaced my thermostat tower and knock sensors, I didn't re-use the tower clips, I connected the knock sensor cables and located them conveniently in place with zip-ties. That way no messing with "hidden" clips in the future!

I copied their offering for 2001 jaguar xj8

I purchased knock sensor part number LNE1692AA from SNG Barratt on 9/19/2019 for $115.81
Now on SNG Barratt it is $144.46 for LNE1692AA and $80.25 for an aftermarket offering

 

Yes, that SU7015 knock sensor from Rock Auto is about as cheap as you can find them these days.

An SU7012 knock sensor will also work fine, they are similarly priced. As far as I can make out it is just an inch or two longer but its function seems to be the same.

 

Carnival Kid - thank you SOOOO much for your post and your photos. I was able to do the replacement, although I didn't technically reattach the sensor to the mount once complete. Based on how it's routed it's not going anywhere and is unlikely to shake loose.

I didn't clear my codes and drove it around the block a few times - engine light still lit but expecting the computer will clear that after a few starts / drives.

I did struggle a bit to get the sensor back on the bolt -- the wooden spoon did the trick - thanks Jim!

The WVE SU7015 knock sensor from Rock Auto is what I just installed! Price was right.

It seems with a little ingenuity you don't need to take off the manifold for replacing this knock sensor. I have the code and getting tired of shops saying the manifold needs to come off which makes replacing a lower cost item a big expense. I assume it makes them more money and after the manifold is off it may make a removing the sensor easier. Shops are also a bit out of hand on the cost of the part. I be ok to pay more for the part if someone do the job leaving the manifold in place. If anyone reads this thread and knows a shop in Westchester/Putnam/Rockland County in NY or possibly lower CT that can handle this repair without the manifold removal let me know. I like to use them for this car and my 2003 XK8. Thank You and for info on the knock sensor replacement. Stevey D
