Timing chain issue
They do that, it depends if the valve springs are pushing the exhaust cam backwards or forwards. Turn the engine slowly by hand & you'd see the RH side go tight & the LH side go slack. Apparently it's that pulsing though the chain that causes vibrations which cracks the plastic tensioners for the secondaries.
You've misunderstood. There are two primary chains, one for the left bank and one for the right, each with its own tensioner. The tensioner on the left bank chain is tight but the right bank tensioner is refusing to push the guide, but this is at starter cranking speed only. It doesn't matter because I am replacing the tensioners, but I was just curious if the oil pressure during cranking would be expected to pump it up or not. Because the tension guide was completely retracted, I held it against the chain with a screwdriver to prevent the chain from jumping out of time during the 'cranking to regain compression' procedure, and it worked.

Thank you for the comment anyway. I know what you were referring to because even though I was holding the guide as tight as I could, the accel/decel of the cam caused by the valve springs was indeed causing the chain slack to alternate between the driving and return sides of the chain as it does on a motorcycle when it transitions from accel to decel.
The plastic body primary tensioners have a check ball and use oil pressure to expand the little piston.(the seals can fail)
The metal body tensioners have a 'toothed-ratchet' to keep the piston from retracting.
They can expand but cannot retract without lifting the mechanism by hand.

I stopped at the bone yard that sold us the car and they had another one with a throttle body that I got for $50. I also grabbed the hood leaper for $25 since the one from the car had escaped. Might I be lucky enough to have a running car at my next work session? We'll see.
Hi Cable Guy . . . I feel your pain re "disappearing words" . . . Its been happening to me like ALOT . . . and its certainly beginning to tick me off. I'm betting you're doing www stuff (this forum) on a desk top PC (same as I try to). I've reported this to a moderator but I won't hold my breath.
Its something to do with assuming THE WHOLE WORLD uses smart tech you take out of your pocket. My only top tip is to REMEMBER TO REFRESH YOUR SCREEN BEFORE YOU TYPE ANYTHING. For some reason, this Jaguar Forums.com does not auto update its pages when you activate a left open tab on your browser. You merrily start typing away and at some point either when you press submit or when auto save trigger point is reached . . . bamm . . . you loose all your type efforts.
Even on this reply to your thread . . . I've copied all this message onto my PC clipboard . . 'cause I don't know if its going to disappear!!
Good Luck with the car BTW

I see no reason why the car would not run once I finish reassembly, that is, presuming the other cylinders have recovered even half as well as the one I checked which went from 0 psi to 180 psi. What a remarkable comeback. But, I am still suspicious of what it might be once the oil is burned away. I spoke about this with another fella who said transmission fluid would be a better choice for this because of the high detergent levels and better cleaning abilities. What do you guys think?
Even if the worst case scenario occurred and the cylinders are trashed, I can still swap the new tensioners and chains onto a used engine.
Me too and never had a problem. Just get off the phone. It's too small and so many mistakes are made that it's hard to follow what they are trying to say?
With a real screen EVERYTHING is now visible. I run dual 28" screen's on my PC.

Single 65" monitor and a wireless keyboard for me when I'm home. It really helps see detail in the pics. Laptop or phone when I'm away. No problems except moderation.
Please explain what you believe the moderators have missed. We moderators are all unpaid volunteers, so we can't possibly read everything posted on the forums. That's why the Report Post option is important, so that infractions can be brought to our attention.
The Jaguar Forums is owned by the online marketing company MH Sub I, LLC doing business as Internet Brands, and the CEO is Bob Brisco. Are you saying that he has left the company?
Thanks,
Don

Hey Don
First of all i really appreciate your participation in the administration of the forum, this forum saved many cars and people's hard earned cash, and it wouldn't be possible without admins
As you should remember, the whole issue sprout out of our comments on current jaguar politics and how sad it is for us to observe its fall, those totally inoffensive comments got deleted and we were told to go pound sand, My point is, that in the era where free speech is becoming luxury, instead of gagging each other for no reason we should rather allow as much of it as possible
That's my 0.5¢
No, we meant Adrian Mardell all the way.

Hi Don B . . . Thanks for your message. I only commented on this thread to explain to the originator that he was not alone in having "disappearing words". I believe my woes were due to using older desktop tech (Windows 7 Professional + Edge as the search engine). I found (after many frustrating sessions of "disappearing words" ) that remembering to REFRESH THE SCREEN BEFORE ANYTHING seemed to work and overcome the issue. I was just trying to point out that ALL other sites/forums/banks etc I use, have overcome this tech glitch.
I did message a moderator and I'll get that correspondence Private Messaged to you.
I think this site is an absolute godsend and (for me) its a real shame that a technical glitch is tainting Jag folk contributing to the site.
Even this message I have copied to my "clipboard" is case it disappears. Pleas keep up the fantastic work.
Cheers Jag Folks

xjack and Dude.Day,
Thank you for the clarification. Many members may not be aware that the moderators and administrators are unpaid volunteers who have nothing to do with the techical support or programming of the underlying platform on which Jaguar Forums runs. When technical issues arise, we forward them to the paid employees of Internet Brands, who are often able to provide assistance, or, in time, to revise the platform programming if necessary.
Regarding the use of older hardware to access the forums, for many years I have used very old Lenovo ThinkPads with Windows 7 Pro, and now with Windows 10. The fact that an ever-increasing number of members are accessing the forums via mobile devices has been the focus of the technical folks, who may not have been able to prioritize dinosaur users like me and some of you. I trust that they are doing the best they can, and in general, they have been responsive to technical issues that we have raised.
Please do not hesitate to keep moderators apprised of any continuing issues you may have. We are active members of the Jaguar community and want everything to work as well as possible.
Regarding the challenges of moderating discussions related to Jaguar's recent management decisions, please know that I have advocated for the lowest level of moderator intervention possible. I believe that Free Speech is one of the most important of our fundamental human rights, and if Jaguar owners should have any online place where they feel safe to express their honest opinions, it should be here. However, we cannot allow any member to directly insult or threaten another member or to make statements that disparage broad groups of people with differing opinions. Free speech depends on respect for differing points of view. As a biographer once summarized Voltaire's philosophy on freedom of speech, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
Cheers,
Don

It's just a Samsung TV, but since I don't watch TV, I use it as a monitor. No big wup. 5.1 surround sound and wireless keyboard as well. Rockin setup.
