Anyone had this happen to them or seen it before?

When the car is cold and when its cold outside (like sub 50 degrees) theres a whine from the transmission as you get closer to the shift point and it gets louder as it gets to the shift point. After about 2 miles of driving it goes away. It just started this Saturday when it was like 35 degrees outside. There's no reduction in performance, no hard shifts, no false neutrals and no fail lights on the dash. Anyone seen this? Valve? Oil pump?

 

Whining can be the pump cavitating. First thing would be to check the fluid level. A transmission service would be the next.

 

Hmm, that doesnt sound as bad as a pump replacement at all. I guess I always think worst case scenario but it could be low fluid.

 

It might also be the condition of the fluid, or slightly clogged filter. The fluid is more viscous when cold and harder to pump.

Personally, I'd be tempted to turn the stereo up louder for the first couple of miles. That sums up old Jaguar ownership, knowing when to turn the stereo up louder, or to worry.

 

Amen to volume. I just drove it over to my local indy to check the fluid level and its 70 degrees now and the car is still semi warm and it was purrrrrfect.

I hope the fluid situation is the issue. The tranny was rebuilt 40k miles ago so hopefully all is well.

Edit - local indy confirmed fluid levels are good. Its 70 here in LA so its warm and when I drove it back to the garage it ran perfectly. I guess we will see what happens in the morning when its cold
