Default unlocking doors problem

Please Help!
My 2001 XJ8 has gremlins.....after turning key off and removing it from the ignition, the doors will not unlock. When you pull on the drivers side handle...nothing happens, it used to unlock the doors. When I push the unlock botton on the dash ....nothing. Is there a reset? is it a relay problem? if my wife drives it, she will be locked inside the car and will not be able to get out. Any suggestions?

There is a door lock relay that might be the issue. It is located in the LH Heelboard. Behind the left-hand side rear seat heelboard -Door lock: micro-relay.

I extracted part of the electrical diagram that shows the location of the relay:

I put a red lined box around the door locking relay item listed in diagram.

The door locking is controlled by the BPM - Body Processing Module.
Look at fuses #5 and #7 in the LH Heelboard Fuse Box, also fuses #3 and #7 in the RH Heelboard Fuse Box.

Another possibility is a door latch switch contacts may need cleaning.
Here is a weblink to a DIY video on replacing the door latch (XK8 - same process) made by forum member Reverend Sam:

You may have to replace the door actuator or the BPM to fix the issue.

I that not an XK8 in the video? Did you mean it is the same on the XJ8?

The video is on an XK8, but the door latch removal steps should somewhat the same for the XJ models.

The door latches for both the XK X308 and XJ X308 are similar.

JTIS manual shows 12 steps for removal on XJ and 24 steps on XK. It does seem that there XK removal of the door latch has more components to remove using the procedures in the manual.

Here is a JPEG file with diagrams showing the component parts for the door handle and door latch for the XK and for the XJ:

Click on the webpage image to get a better view after the dropbox webpage opens.

I must admit they are not identical.
