So I found that XJR100 and sent a mechanic to look at it as its 2 states away from me .
It has 67k and it needs all that i? Anyone knows how much it would cost ?the car has been sitting in a barn .

Belts need to be replaced
Spark plugs
valve covers are leaking into holes
Fuel injector is rodent eaten
Rear Sway wish bone bar bushing dry cracked
Need Air filter fuel filter
Rotors slightly are lipped
Pads 10mm not sure it's good or bad
Rear 7.5
Rim chrome trim damaged

Thoughts on repair cost ?

Belts need to be replaced ($30 for accessory, $60 for SC belt Goodyear gatorback are nice belts)
Spark plugs (NGK Iridium $80)
valve covers are leaking into holes ($30 per side for gasket set inc spark plug boss seals)
Fuel injector is rodent eaten - (second hand loom off any XJR 308)
Rear Sway wish bone bar bushing dry cracked (about $10 per bush x 2)
Need Air filter fuel filter ($30 for a new filters each) the fuel filter can be a sod to change depending on where its lived)
Rotors slightly are lipped (arent they all)
Pads 10mm not sure it's good or bad - (pads I think are 15mm new)
Rear 7.5
Rim chrome trim damaged (depends which one, bumper/window etc?)

This work along with an oil change and filter and maybe check the tires if its been sitting shouldn't break the bank - it's a days work to someone who knows these cars so find a good Indy Jaguar garage and it'll be fine.

I used to live in the Noho Arts District. Jack and Saed at North Hollywood Auto Repair are the most trustworthy mechanics I've ever met. They handle everything on my X350 that I can't handle myself. Tell them Jon Robinson sent you. They also give AAA discounts. They could handle all those repairs no problem and for a lot less than actual Jag mechanics, which are very few and far between in Los Angeles.

Default Why in a barn, and photos!

So I want to know why its been sitting in a barn, photos of 'barn find' condition, and where the heck is a barn in downtown LA?

No, they're on Tujunga just below Burbank. Almost across from the train station and the Ford dealership.

I guess I forgot to hit the correct button, or some administrator removed my last comment: but I questioned why if you could afford to send a mechanic two states away to examine the car, why you are concerned about the cost of repairs.

I would also be concerned about any additional rodent damage. Were you not able to find and/or close on the cars you saw in LA?

I m only concerned because I have not seen the car . A mechanic has and I paid 170 dollars for a pre paid inspection , but I can only rely on his comments .
Would anyone buy a car on sites such as Ebay ,without physically seeing it ?

I have talked to so many sellers that I Think I'm getting a bit tired and blasé . To tell you the truth I'm afraid that even if a good deal would be in front of me , I would not see it! Not sure when they telling the truth or not . They always say , "the car is perfect " they when I dig deeper And ask them for the maintenance record, they have almost none , telling me "the car does not need much " really ? Gosh I'm gonna end up with a Kia ( joke)

Yes, "the car is perfect", "all the maintenance has been done", and "the car needs nothing" are all forms of dealer-speak and mean nothing.

What I have found most effective is to screen out the rubbish, early.

I won't go to see a car, or get an inspection, without passing the following screening process :

1) Send the seller an e-mail, asking a few pertinent questions concerning : service history, any major work done, any accidents, clean title, and so on. Frequently you get no answer at all, or evasive ones.

2) Run Carfax.

Now on a couple of lucky occasions, with my last car, a Land Rover, and the XJR I have now, Carfax threw up comprehensive main dealer service histories.

Yes, the LR was from Ebay, and worked out great. Got to do your due diligence, though.

Also, a barn find is a car for someone who really enjoys the process of going through a car and restoring it to running condition. No offence, but you clearly aren't interested in working on the car yourself. Therefore you should be looking for an enthusiast owned car, in the best condition you can find.

. . . same county; SoCal car; low mileage; MB transmission; Super charged. Pretty too. What a great place to buy cars. And junk yards on every other corner with loads of used parts.. . .

Well, whether the most sound judgment or not, I made a tentative deal on my 97 XJR "remotely" without having the ability lay eyes on the car.

The car was in TX and I am in NC. It was a trade-in, so the dealer had limited information on the car, but did have a pretty comprehensive work-up on what they thought it needed. I felt like they were being very up-front as their estimates of repairs came to $3500 (their shop rates, full OEM list price on parts) and were actually planning to send it to the auction as the expense to repair wasn't worth their time. But they were happy to share that estimate and "punch list" which I then bounced off of the community and some local independent shops.

After a slew of high resolution photos, phone calls, emails.... I put down a $500 non-refundable deposit, and bought two tickets out to Houston. The risk was losing the $500 and the cost of travel if I found the car to be unacceptable.

There definitely was a risk, but after many emails, phone calls, photos and the aforementioned maintenance "punch list" review, I felt about 90% that it would work out. Given the condition and mileage on the car, I was willing to take the minimal risk as the "$3500 in repairs" seemed grossly exaggerated once reviewed with folks here and at some local shops, so I think the dealer was just being conservative as they didn't normally deal with Jags. In the end, they were right and probably put about $500 into necessary repairs.

Of course depending on the situation, one may not be willing to do so.

It just depends on the situation.

I do sympathize with Mark's suggestion as well though that it seems like you might be better suited to a car already well sorted or in good condition versus a project. This is simply based on what I read into your comments above, so I may be mistaken. But that is an important consideration as well.

.
