Default Value of parts car? Opinions sought...

I have an option on a 2003 XJ Sport. The car has been thoroughly keyed and totalled by insurance, and the transmission is probably shot. The engine is in good shape - looks good, sounds good. It was daily driven until the transmission started having issues, at which time it was parked, keyed, and totalled. It has a lot of standard XJ issues - torn up armrest/cupholder, messed up sunroof, etc., but aside from that stuff, the paint, and the transmission it's in ok shape.

I pulled the codes, and it has ABS codes for pump circuit, system voltage and engine issues evap, something else I don't remember - but nothing serious. Oddly, no transmission codes despite its suggested failure.

I need very little from this car - nothing mechanical, all trim and a few electronics - so it's really not worth the $700 to me. I'm curious if anyone has opinions on the value of the rest of the stuff - or if anyone has any needs I could help address. The steel is certainly worth $200-$300 and I feel like the wheels (18" 5-spoke Sport wheels) and the engine ('03 4.0) easily make up the difference - but what's the real market for a 4.0 like these days?

Any opinions are appreciated...

Edit: Does anyone know if multiple blacks were offered in '03? Would the paint on this sport be the same as my '03 XJR? If so, I could definitely use its rear bumper.

I'm tearing down a VDP for personal use, and I've listed well over one hundred parts coming off the car. Even if you don't have much space, all the switches and modules would be a good thing to keep.

A subjective question....best way is to catagorise the car into various areas and list the most likely parts that are 'fast movers'....such as panels with doors and front fenders as No.1 and work backwards.

Interior....all components like dash fixtures, electronics and all modules starting with door and seat modules as No.1 and work backwards.
Same applies to all seats and interior panels.

Mechanical...if engine is in good nick, you can sell it as a complete lump as No.1 and work backwards.

Transmission....you could probaly say it's a given that it will need repairs.
Being a late AJ27 model and g/box it should be easily fixable as the g/box in this range had many updates fitted.

As for the colour black....methinks Jaguar have at least two or three different shades of black ;o)

Yeah... the truth is that I probably don't have long-term ownership aspirations for the XJR. There are some things I'd like to deal with, but really my goal is to enjoy it another year or so, then move on. If those things don't get addressed it won't upset me too much. If I can pick up this parts car, grab a few things things, not lose money, and maybe help some people out I'm in, but I don't have the interest in stockpiling rainy day parts... (I've got a garage full of stockpiled parts for a whole array of other vehicles! )

That's largely why I'm interested in finding people who need stuff, or at least gaining an understanding of what folks, in general, could use or might need out there.

I feel like an idiot now for posting that - I took a picture of the VIN tag on the door, which of course has the color code. Parts car = PED, my car = PED. Derp.

3-4 K over 6 months. If you are in a hurry, 2K over 30 days if you sell at fire sale prices. The headlights and transmission will cover the cost of the car, the rest is gravy.

The transmission is probably toast, unless you think even toast it's worth something... ?

I may try a fluid & filter change to see if I can bring it back. As I mentioned, it had logged no transmission DTCs, which seems weird if it was legitimately having a failure. I dunno... I have never trusted nor liked those ZF 5-speeds - they're always problematic... That's a big part of why I bought an R!

Even toast it's worth $100. They are rebuildable.

If you have the space, why not? Engine alone is worth a couple times . . . . .

Alright, well, I pulled the trigger. Picking it up in about an hour. I can count on one hand the things I need/want, so if anyone needs anything from an '03 Sport, lemme know. Once I dig into it, I'll post up a classified.

I was thinking about flushing the transmission to try and make it move again, but frankly it's not worth the time or the fluid, and all I'd end up with is a transmission I know works for a few minutes. Might as well just sell it as parts or recycle it with the car. It could never be represented as a "good used transmission."

Not so sure: long time ago DanielSand noted that smart money would have a transmission repaired and ready for installation. You have one now that can be checked out and readied for use or sale . . .

Actually...I tend to agree.
These are not a difficult transmission to rebuild and is easy with it out of the car.

Ya, I probably would keep and rebuild now- if you have space go for it. Let us know when you put it in the for sale area, I will probably grab some stuff from you.

Oh, and make sure you take compression readings before you start parting so you can attest to the health of the engine to a potential buyer.

Rebuilding the transmission wouldn't do me much good - mine's an R and doesn't use the same box. If someone else wants t rebuild it that of course is fine, but it's not something I am going to invest in.

The car is here now, so I'm going to do a little documentation then start taking it apart.
