Vibration at various speeds
I put a new battery in my 1999 XJ8L, 36k miles.
The next morning I took it for a drive and it started vibrating like the old nylon tires used to. Flat spots that would go away when the tires got warm.
It then came back then went away. Now it came back at about 50, then goes away. Then 70, few miles goes away.
Today I was on the Freeway, it started again and the restricted performance light came on, along with the check engine light. The first warning went away, check engine light still on. Vibration comes and goes-and this is odd-but when I used the brakes the car dipped left hard enough I had to correct.
Does anyone have any ideas on this one? Sure is odd. I used to hear in the past that some cars computer may have to be reset after a new battery but can't remember if this is true or not.
Thank you in advance...
Dan

RE: Vibration at various speeds
Sounds like a bad wheel bearing. Get it looked at asap.
To check, lift front tire off ground and grab at 12 & 6 o'clock. See if you have movement back and forth, meaning push at 12 and pull
at 6 and vice versa. If moves like that definitly bearing. I wouldn't advise you to
be going no 70 miles per hour either until fixed.

Tires and brakes are ok. This is just so odd-tie rods are tight-no movement. Rack is secure. A sticking caliper wouldn't cause the shaking at the different speeds. I keep wanting to go back to changing the battery for the CEL but then there is the shaking. I'll go to Autozone in the morning and have them read the codes.

The pull when you braked more indicates a caliper issue although I did have a J that pulled
because of the tires. Does it pull everytime you brake?
If so, rotate tires front to rear and drive again. Maybe rotate anyway and see if shaking in steering wheel changes.
Also front lower bushings are known for going bad. The ones in front arm to subframe. See if they are cracked.
