I still think the same,.......you did well by taking a nice check, plus your car. And I emphasize,...YOUR CAR. The car that you loved, and the car you know everything about. Buying another one will be another learning curve, and fixing someone else's f-ups they will not tell you about when purchasing.

There are low mileage engines in CA (I don't know the FLA situation) to be had for around 2500. Another grand in labor (or DIY), and YOUR car is back on the road, as healthy as ever. Plus there is money left over for a nice vacation. What's not to like?

Parting out is TOO much work. Time consuming, parts everywhere, grease, oil,......anyway, that's what I would do. You do as you please of course.

 

ok - well i got the check for the car from the insurance and also bought the salvage for $400...should have a salvage title in a few weeks...i also went to check the car out at my mechanics and did look great...i am pretty sure it is the engine, starter, maybe alternator? just seems like so much of it is fine so i am leaning toward sinking money into, i guess i need to see how much insurance will cost and who would insure me...also i pulled the following codes when i was at the car today...certainly tells a story of some of the issues...

P0304 OBD II Misfire detected – cylinder A4 (4)
P0308 OBD II Misfire detected – cylinder B4 (8)
P1316 OBD II Misfire excess emission

and some possible causes...i probably have a few of these :-)
Cylinder compression low
Worn camshaft / broken valve spring(s)
Fuel delivery pressure (low / high)
Fuel injector(s) blocked / leaking
Fuel injector(s) continuously open
Fuel contamination
Fuel injector circuit fault(s)
(Injector DTCs also flagged)
Spark plug failure / fouled / incorrect gap
ECM to ignition module primary circuit fault
(Cylinder misfire detected DTC also flagged)
Ignition module ground circuit:
open circuit, high resistance
Ignition module / coil failure

 

I bought an engine with 57,000 miles on it from Coventry West near Atlanta.
It had warranty and the upper tensioners were done. Runs great. If EVERYTHING
else is great, then replacing the engine makes sense.

 

Yea I am leaning toward new engine...thanks for the tips everyone...sure has made this experience much easier...also the trickiest part to all this is really the insurance...and who will insure me and for how much...I know the car well enough to know what could be screwed up and the engine was one of those things that I was never quite sure about even before the flood and if I put a new engine in than I know that box will be ticked for a while...and after putting $15K in the car in the past few years...makes me want to leverage that investment and keep the car

 

got my title today with ..."salvage rebuildable" on it...

once i get the work done i get it inspected and then bring the report to the DMV to have the title switched to a rebuilt title....

time to find an engine...or buy a 1985 XJ6...like this one...not too sure

My first new Jaguar was an 82 III -- I love it ... It did not always love me.

They were not really daily drivers when new.

 

just to give as quick update on my jag...well it is done (almost)...car runs great and i've been driving it...replacement engine put in (75,000) miles which is half of what i had on the original engine...new alternator, new fuel pumps, new starter, new AC compressor, new water pump, all new hoses, gaskets, and seals and a new battery...so far so good...my TCM seems to be relearning my driving style which is pretty cool to feel...and then i have a small list so far...car won't fill past 1/4 tank (probably evap stuck closed/TSB 310-10) and then gear selector cable is slightly out of alignment...need to push up a bit above the R to get into reverse, and coolant level was low by about 1/4 gallon after driving the first 20 miles...which i am hoping was just an air pocket as there was no evidence of a leak...aside from that she is looking good and i am enjoying having a car with just about everything new...cost was about $10K...$2.5K for the replacement engine, and $6.7K for all the other parts and labor to install everything including the engine...i know some of you probably think i am nuts, but i've put so much money into it over the past 3 years ($10K) that just about everything has been replaced and i don't plan to sell it, just drive it till she is dead :-) i am a happy camper...so any of you that have a flooded car give it some thought and have some doe...
