Default water pump oops

First time poster so bear with me...

I had a leaky water pump on my '99 xjr that needed replacing, so I replaced it. Problem was the new pump was leaking all around the gasket (cardboard type). I tried to gently tighten the bolts and, of course, on the last one, just as I was telling my dad that I was afraid to overtighten, it snapped. So now I need to find a replacement water pump shoulder bolt (or five, just to be on the safe side) and remove the bit of bolt that snapped of in the block. I found out after the fact that my pops had replaced the metal gasket-type plate that had been behind the original pump before putting the new one in place and I figure that plate isn't needed with the new one and that is what prevented proper seating causing the leakage and eventual broken bolt. Feedback on that would be helpful as well...

Just so you know what you're working with: I've lived and worked on farms most of my life, so I'm moderately comfortable working on an engine, but I am far from pro. This is my first time working on a jag and just as a side note: I am thoroughly impressed with the engineering of this vehicle. Everything is well built and organized such that working under the hood is reasonably convenient, at least compared to most foreign (asian) cars that I have dealt with. So kudos to those brits for that.

One last thing: While I was in there I pulled the passenger cam cover off to have a look at my tensioners as I am not sure of the service history of this car. The previous owner was an elderly man who obviously took good care of her. She is very clean and shows little to no wear anywhere on or in the engine as far as I have seen, though I do have the original, plastic tensioners, so I will likely be back soon for some advice on that job. Thanks in advance for any advice/assistance.

This video show how to use an extractor.
. Replacement gaskets can be found on Ebay. Most auto parts
stores only sell pump and gasket together. Torque wrenches are your friend.
If all the bolts are torqued the same, they are less likely to leak. A thin coat of
Permatex waterpump and thermostat RTV will add extra insurance against leaks

Maybe I should be more specific: I need to source replacement shoulder bolts for the water pump in a 1999 Jaguar XJR. I have torque wrenches (that particular bolt was corroded). I don't need a gasket. Again, there was a metal plate behind the pump that was part of the original design but that prevented proper seating of the new pump. No amount of torque, proper or improper, was going to prevent leakage with that metal plate back there. I was not around when the two pumps were swapped. I came in just in time to witness the leakage and take part in the subsequent downward turn of events. The local auto store chains can't find these specific bolts, for whatever reason, and I am not having any luck on my own, searching online.

While your "Location: at my house" has a certain cuteness to it, it really can make giving good advice difficult ! I don't remember exactly what makes the pump shoulder bolts special, and it will not be your cheapest or quickest solution, but I am pretty certain if you can explain which bolts you need to "Coventry West" in Lithonia GA, they will be able for furnish the actual replacements.

McMaster-Carr or Graingers sell small quantity hardware orders online, albeit at a premium price.

Good luck, and welcome to Jaguars. You have discovered a little known secret of the brand- they are, all in all, fairly easy to work on, and can be a affordable IF you do your own work. The depreciation is extremely high, which is good for buying one!

There 5 Flange head bolts (M6 x 50mm) that are used to install the water pump - bolt (part number JFB10610B superceded now is AJ88674) torque for these bolts is 8 Nm + 90° (number of degrees to the handle).

There are 3 water pump pulley bolts ( Flange head screw M6 x 12mm - part number JZS100105) and the torque for them is 10-14 Nm.

JTIS instructions says to install a new water pump gasket (AJ88922) and O ring (not sure if it needs one - if its does not sure if it is 55mm OD or 70mm OD).

Please note that the specification of the water pump retaining bolts has changed. The AJ88674 bolts are M6x55mm and not M6x50mm as on the original part. As they are not fully threaded, the thread is too short to be tightened on either the original pump (with o-ring) or new type Airflex pump - even though that has a deeper flange as it does not use the mental gasket of the original pump. I had to source some third party M6x50mm bolts.
These are relatively easy to obtain in the US but in the UK I used Titanium alloy bolts (grade5) as these are equivalent to the steel grade 8.8 bolts required and much easier to source.

For any gasket in a cooling system, I always apply Permatex semi-setting gasket paste to both sides. Never had a leak, using that.

HEAR ME NOW.

Replace those plastic tensioners NOW. Do not wait, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars. Every time you start it from now until you replace them it is a GAMBLE. A potentially expensive gamble vs $150 pair of tensioners.
This has been a public service announcement.
Thank me later.
