what scan tool to buy

Check out the scan tool thread:

The AutoEnginuity is the least expensive one that can read all or most of the Jaguar codes (not just engine codes) with the proper option package.

I have one of these on order:
$52.99 - ELM327 Bluetooth OBD-II Wireless Transceiver Dongle - OBD/OBD2 Car Diag. Tools
It is the elm327. I have purchased a bunch from dealextreme.com and have always been happy with their service.
You couple that with a $5 download (Torque)for your Iphone or Andriod and your phone becomes a scan tool with the ability to link to the GPS as well as the Internet. You can do long term studies as well as time your 0-60 sprints...
The software has the Jaguar codes built in (or so they claim).
Since I don't have it in my hand yet, I can't comment on it yet, but the reviews on the internet make it sound promising. I am sure others will chime in with their choices as well.

Look at all the drivability threads that include stumbles, tranny shift problems, abs faults, MAF faults, and cam timing offsets. Then decide if you want to read a code, which you can have done free at the auto parts or if you want to graph feedback from sensors, read transmission and abs codes, read sensor data and diagnose a problem. If you wish the later, get Autoenginuity with Jag extensions.

Hi chris64
I bought a pocket code reader about 3 weeks ago when our 2001 xj8 check engine light came on along with ABS trac and the Skid control fault.
It now is a lot easier to just plug in this hand code scanner and get the codes rather keep going to a parts store to get the codes read.
It is an Actron Pocket Scan Code Reader Part No CP9125. I purchase online with Advanced Auto Parts.com. Price was on temporary sale from $59.95 to $49.95 with no shipping charges (checked off local store pickup). Also I was able to apply promo code A123 for additional $20 off the $50 purchase. I purchase an oil filter at the same time. Net cost came to $29.95 plus tax.
This is just a basic code reader that just gives the engine fault codes in the ecm.
The promo code a123 can be used for any part listed on Advance Auto Part website (also most fluids, auto detailing products, etc, except engine oil). Offer expires after 4/15/2011.

OBDII Code Scanners ** Member Approved ** - Page 6 - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum
The short version is it works as advertised. Not the AutoEnginuity, but 1/10th the price.
Now I can drive down the road with my phone in it's cradle and watch live data streaming to it. Very cool.
The 0-60, 1/4 mile stats are fun for certain.

2005 Vanden Plas (XJ8) scan tools
Months if stealing time - Hours and HOURS - to read these 20 pages, and search & search... and finally, I will just stupid call dealers and manufacturers in the morning! Last jag I buy? Eventually, at least until the morons that own and want to destroy Jaguar get over their ugly philosophy! I digress...
Really? I eventually read the thread backwards for a more modern answer. ? You keep posting the "List"... LOL Well, a word to the wise. Just call the manufacturers on the stupid list? I'll update, fyi, if it works.
I've owned 4:
1) 1983 Jaguar XJ6 Vanden Plas gold - out of a junk yard, sweet
2) 1997 XJ6 Vanden Plas - last of the XJs light green
3) 2005 Jaguar X-Type white
4) 2005 Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas
Never needed a reader till the Ford mess. Now Tata has Jaguar in it's ugly phase.
I thought I'd bore you with a few useless details. I mean, why didn't you create a seperate thread for the Action Jackson street racing useless reader people? How about a funtional solution thread... LOL OK, you try. Thanks. Those of us who have real Jaguar problems would appreciate it.
I guess the AE is $500 if we have a $1200-$2500 laptop then? I see $900-$3000 on AE site. Like I wrote above, I'll just call now.
Trust me! Don't botger reading this whole thing! JUST CALL DEALERS AND MANUFACTURERS! BE CERTAIN THEIR UNIT READS TRANSMISION, SUSPENSION, ABS & LIGHTS, CABIN INFO SUCH CODES TOO, and you're set. Just get another job and eat the cost! It is much less painful! Unfortunately, I am partially parylized and 24/7/365 level 10 pain; so, i had to read it all! It really isn't going to beat a search and destroy mission of finding and calling the makers/dealers on the "LIST"! PLEASE, TRUST ME! what a nightmare! This sucked worse than actually doing the repairs? I'll let you know that too - if they can't tell us! LOL
