As the title suggests, can anyone tell me which key fob to buy for the 99 XJ8L? This is a USA car. I see some key fobs on ebay, but have also read that there may be a few different models out there for the X308 years. I bought the car with one key and no key fobs :P Thanks.

 

These are the 2 models of FOB's for the x308.
I am not sure which model you will need, guess the old one, but sure someone else will chime in to confirm that aspect.

 

The pic above is the 2 keys and keyfob transmitters to my 1999 XJ8L (left)
and my wife's 2001 XJ8 (right). I took that pic to show the difference between the 2.

The one on the left will work for X100/X308 cars UP TO (and including) MY2000.
The one on the right is required for 2001 MY onward.

The one with all the buttons the same shape is what you need for your 1999 XJ8.

The later ones have different lock/unlock buttons and SMALL boot lid and headlamp buttons. I heard that Ford keyfob transmitters will work for the LATER (2001 onward) X308/X100.

Thanks for the responses. I went ahead and tried the Ford FOBs on risk since they were so cheap, but they did not work (see thread below):

I'll keep an eye out for a good deal on the older FOB to try that.

 

I'll add for reference I'm pretty sure I need the LJA2610AA model; 315 MHz for North American market.


There is also a similar looking model, LJA2610BA, which appears to be 433 MHz for the European market. Ironically, a picture of the back says "made in USA by TRW".
