Default Width of an X308

Can anyone tell me the width of an x308 including mirrors?

The reason for the question is that my S-Type is just narrow enough to fit on my drive. I discounted an XJ because it is bigger but a friend suggested that whilst it's longer, it's not wider.

I've tried Google but cannot find anything to confirm dimensions that definitely include the mirrors so I don't know if I'm comparing like with like.

You were lucky I was sat next to my bureau which I keep a lot of my car stuff, including the original brochure for X308.

Perfect, thanks. I found a similar diagram for the s-type which gives the width of that as 80".

The XJ doesn't look like it's narrower to my eyes. However, that means it fits. Which means there's a V8 on the horizon.

No worries, the X308 and it's predecessors are relatively small by today's standards. My neighbour has a 2014 Ford Focus Estate that is almost as big as the XJ, and his wife's 2015 fiesta stands taller than the XJ too!

Despite its stately length, it makes a great city car because it's narrower than most other vehicles, and going around double parked cars is easier the narrower your vehicle is.

The x308 is roughly the same width and height as a 90's Porsche 911, but (possibly) longer than a panamera

So basically the S-Type that I bought on the basis that it's smaller is actually wider that the X308 I would have preferred?

I'd feel silly were it not for the fact that I love my S-Type.

Yeah, it is an ideal city car. You can steer it well and it parks with ease, even without blonde beepers...

I currently have a VW Touareg V6 TDI as a loaner and that is 2.2m wide (mirror to mirror) compared to the 1.8m (mirror to mirror) of the XJ... And you notice every single millimeter more!

That may be tip of door mirror (folded out, not in) to tip of door mirror. I have it as 2060mm.

Folded in, 1818mm. The car itself is narrower.

Funny, I was about to write, "But it still dwarfs my MGB," just to be a wiseacre, but then I looked at the stats:

x308
Width: 69" (mirrors in)
Height: 51" (SWB), 52" (LWB)

MGB
Width: 60"
Height: 48" (chrome bumper), 51" (rubber bumper)

There's a difference, but it's not nearly as much as I would've thought.

Of course, a couple of other measurements make a big difference.

x308
Wheelbase: 113" (SWB), 118" (LWB)
Length: 197" (SWB), 201" (LWB)

MGB
Wheelbase: 91"
Length: 153" (chrome bumper), 158" (rubber bumper)

people forget these cars always have been and always will be 4 door sports cars. They were never meant to be the big cruisers that the bentleys and rolls royces were for.

9 Years ago when I bought my first XJ, I was criticised by people and often asked "Why have you bought such a big car?" or "That car is too big for a young lad like you!".

Nowadays however, I have trouble finding it in car parks because she's hidden by all the loser cruiser SUV's and MPV's. Then when leaving the car park, I'm creeping around slow because it's difficult to see past the big modern cars.

The optical illusion that makes the X308 seem big is it's long bonnet, which was designed to take a V12. That's why the X350 looks shorter overall, because it's engine bay was never going to take a V12 so they were able to give more cabin space by making the bonnet shorter.

For information, I measured an actual X308 against my S-type this morning. According to my tape measure, an X308 is about 6cm wider. Given that the S is really too wide for my drive anyway, the XJ won't work for me.

At least I know now.

To be fair mine always looks bigger than it actually is, but the measure doesn't lie KB.

I know this thread is basically dead, but for any future reference, my owner's vehicle care handbook says..........................(2001 XJ8 VDP)

Overall width including mirrors 81.7inches (2074mm)
Overall width excluding mirrors 70.8 inches (1799mm)
