Default Will 4L From 2001 Stype Fit 1999 XJ8?

Hi folks, hope this is on the correct forum. Please tell me does anyone know if a 4 Liter engine from a 2001 S Type will fit (direct drop in replacement) in a 1999 XJ8?

I have an opportunity to purchase an engine (as above) from a 2001 S type, rear end wreck (engine is very nice low mileage as well).

I also have an opportunity to purchase an entire car 1999 XJ 8 with bad engine (new tensioners, and such) but unfortunately too late as bad knock in engine so needs rebuilding. Also I believe this was nickasil so why not just replace entire engine with newer non nickasil.

Can purchase both from separate sellers for extremely reasonable cost and then do work myself. Very competent with a wrench or two - have worked on Jags before and reasonably extensive.

So hopefully simple question - will the engine fit without any modifications or computer issues?

Thanks so much - hope to get a reply as deals won't last long.

Sincerely, ... Grant ...

Both engines are AJ27's and therefore the long block should swap. You are going to have to make the '01 engine look like the '99 wiring harness and other electronic connections. Seems like there are few other issues to work out like the oil pump or slump if I remember correctly but nothing that cannot be resolved if you are willing to try this.

The S-Type is AJ28 and the 1999 X308 is AJ27.
The following things need to be swapped (NOT A COMPLETE LIST but from memory).
The intake cams (5 lobe to 4 lobe reluctor).
The torque converter drive plate.
Intake manifold.
Front timing cover.
Motor mounts.
Thermostat housings.
Coolant outlet pipe between heads.
Oil pan and lower sump plate.
Crank damper.
CMPS.
CKPS.
Ignition coils.
Cam covers.
All accessory mount brackets.
Exhaust manifolds and O2 sensors.
I think maybe the KNOCK SENSORS??

Basically you need to place both engines side-by-side and make the AJ28 engine LOOK like an AJ27. Place the AJ27 engine harness on the engine and MAKE SURE all things line up AND PLUG IN!!!!!!!!!!!

The basic block and heads will be the only thing you will be using.

Mods,

The above post needs to be added to the FAQ post above.

Grant, if you get into this it would make a great documentary thread for the forum. Lots of S type engines out there.

Default Thanks to the GREAT INFORMATION

Hi and thanks to the reply's about putting a 4l from a 2001 S type into a 1999 XJ8.

How can I express how appreciative I am about this most valuable information and this entire web site? You all are just great and you show that you really are supportive of one another.

I'll probably pass on the swap as I could do a straight swap, but when it comes to changing a lot of other parts, welllllll, probably more that I am prepared for just now. This would tie up my carport a lot longer than I would want.

I'll keep searching the XJR site for information regarding my 1996 XJR and the issues I'm tending to. Small stuff but well worth the effort as I just love this one. Thanks again for taking the time and effort to respond to my post.

Sincerely, ... Grant ...
