while driving shut off no power engine fail safe/ gear fault show up\ engine would start no power to switch set for 5 min car started up

while taking a ride down the highway my car just shut off all light come on the dash with engine safe mode, gear fault, pull over off to the side of road turn off key try to start Err showed up on temp control no power to starter, wait 5 min every thing cleared off of dash. next day car did the same thing check batter its good cable all good had to sit for about 5 to 8 min before the car would start. have any one had this problem with there xj8 2002

 

Sure sounds like a power fault. You just have not yet found it.

 

This is not one that shows on most peoples radar as it seldom happens. I've seen it twice in the last 50 years! Yes half a century...holy cow I'm old !!!

Back in 1967 I was rolling up I4 in Central Florida one night going about 75-80 at night. Wham, everything goes dead...lights, engine, everything with no warning. Rolled to a stop on the side of the road. Started right back up and away I went. Over the next several days it did it a couple more times and with greater frequency. Long story short I happened to be looking at the ammeter the next time it did it and saw it peg big time on the positive. Can you say alternator?? Not a bearing so no noise. A failing diode. Replaced and it never happened again.


Forward about 45 years and I get a call from my daughter that her car has died at a 7/11 about 50 miles from home...short story ..dying alternator.

Go to an Advanced Auto and see if they can run a free battery & alternator output test...if it will start of course<G>
