Question Xj8 ticking noise

I have noticed a weird and loud ticking noise in this 1998 XJ8. I took a video which got the sound loud and clear. LINK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqAM...ature=youtu.be

If anyone could tell me what the problem is or could be, It would be much appreciated

Check oil level, check secondary timing chain tensioners for cracks.

Its hard to tell where its coming from but it sounded like it got louder the brief moment the camera/microphone pointed toward the front of the motor. DO NOT run the engine any more until you remove the valve covers and inspect those secondary timing chain tensioners. If its what I suspect, it could be only one more tick away from coming apart completely. This is what's called an interference motor, meaning that if the timing chains slip a tooth on the gears, the pistons crash into the valves and bend them. That pretty much means a replacement motor. But if you replace the timing chain tensioners now, then it'll be OK. Do a search on the forum for "timing chain tensioners" under the X308 and X100 subforums for lots of info including step-by-step guides.

My 99 XJ8 is making the same noise, my shade tree mechanic neighbor also believe it is the timing chain tensioners. The chains, guides and tensioners were replace before so I'm not 100% in agreement but the car has been sitting in my garage for the last two years.

Only way to tell for sure is to remove cam cover; it is not difficult. Sounds like a cam follower / tappet. Other possibilities, stuck variable valve timing actuator, or it is not getting oil due to blocked filter. Maybe stuck valve.

I think you have a bad cam lobe or a bent valve. Should be easy to see with the covers off. Not a timing chain noise.
