Default XJ8 transmission fluid (ATF) compatiblities

When our 2001 XJ8 was completely rebuilt in Sept 2010, the ZF transmission repair shop almost filled the transmission with ZF Lifeguard 5 ( Direct replacement for ESSO LT71141),

After the transmission was reinstalled, we had to add another 2 and one half liters (we used the VW replacement G052162a2 transmission fluid from local VW dealership at $20/liter).

Now after 3 1/2 years (36,000 miles) we want to do a transmission service (change the filter & partially change the fluid - maybe 6 liters).
It looks like maybe we can use FEBI G052162A2 atf transmission fluid - $12.56 per 1 liter bottle as the replacement atf fluid for sale on RM European Auto Parts website:

Volkswagen FEBI Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF1) (1 Liter) G052162A2 - RM European Auto Parts

Free FEDEX ground shipping.

Here are a couple of comments from the XK8 forum posts:
7 quarts would be 70% of the 10 quarts it holds. Not bad I guess.
If you're dropping the pan and changing the filter, expect to use 6 to 7 quarts of ATF. There's probably no reason to purchase anymore than 8 quarts.

I am looking for advice.

JTIS show 10 liters capacity with torque converter.

Do the same search you did yesterday at Walmart

The reason that Valvoline Dex/Merc Maxlife is sometimes hard to find
at Walmart is that BMW owners alert each other when there is stock
at a particular Walmart. BMW only uses ZF automatics ...

To confirm, search on:

bmw zf valvoline dex/merc

Hello Jim....in this day and age there are any number of good quality trans fluids out there that meet and in most cases surpass the original Esso specs.
My own personal favourite is Castrol Transmax-Z which I believe goes under another name in your country.
I am about due to replace my oil after five years and 75,000klm.
I am going to do this at the same time I install the remote dipstick kit that I have had for about three years ;o))
Gotta make life easy for myself these days, that's why I fitted a remote engine oil filter up near the air cleaner box a couple of years ago.
My ZF box was rebuilt before I bought the car in 2006 and the car has now covered 202,000klm.

Good find Jim

I just ordered a case of RAVENOL.

Vw ATF - Vw Transmission Fluid - G 052 162 A2 TL52162 Vw - Case

Shipping included with purchase.

I use the fluid in VW/Audi 01M, 01V and Jaguar 5HP24.

Hi Bob
Thank you and thanks to GGG for fixing the post title - I appreciate it.
Here is update
Good News.
My Indy mechanic put our XJ8 up on the lift and cooled the transmission pan down to 60 degrees using big fan under it.
Then ran the engine and partially removed the plug above the pan and the fluid started pouring out. The fluid looks like new and the transmission did not need any fluid.

I thnk I am going to wait at least another year before doing a transmission service - fluid and filter change.

Is the FEBI branded VW G052162a2 transmission fluid the same as the VW branded G052162a2 transmission fluid?

Also Bob - Did you get the 12 bottles with shipping for the $141.75?

I have used the FEBI fluid before.
I don't remember where I bought it.

I did order the RAVENOL fluid last week but have not gotten it yet.
I ordered some from BLAU about a year ago but it was the old part number so I bought this newer version. They billed my CC so I should get it this week. I got the 'free shipping' over $50 so the price was right.
