XJR R1 wheel question
My understanding is that the beautiful BBS Milan wheels included with the R1 package were necessary to clear the larger brakes that were fitted.
Is that correct, or will other 18-inch wheels work (assuming offset, bolt pattern, center bore, etc., meet Jaguar specifications)?

Hi Jon,
as far as I know, you are correct.
The Milans have half an inch added to their width (8.5"), compared to the Asteroids(8"). This seems to be neccessary to fit the Brembo brakes.
Kind regards,
Alex

I'm curious about this too. I believe you're right. My '98 XJR (R1 wasn't available that year) has OEM Penta wheels 18x8. A previous owner upgraded to Brembo brakes on the front and added spacers to clear the calipers. Milan rims clear the larger calipers.
What I don't know is which if any other 18 inch wheels will fit without spacers or modification. The BBS Milans seem to be hard to find and very expensive.

If you're trying to go OEM then all the factory fit options that work with Brembo calipers will be very hard to find and expensive
there's one or two other BBS wheel models that were made to fit brembo-equipped cars, I can't remember the name right now but some searching should pull it up somewhere.
As a Performance-Option in MY 2000 (at least it was called that in Europe) there where:
Milan 18" - For XJ and XK
Paris 20" - For XK
Detroit 20" - For XK
Monaco 18" - For S-Type
I think the only ones you can fit to the XJ are the Milan, Paris and Detroit as the Monaco have not the correct clearance.
But the Paris and Detroit are even more rare and expensive than the Milans.

S-Type wheels will NOT fit 4 3/4" 5 on 5 bolt pattern. The S-Type uses Ford metric bolt pattern.

Thanks to all for the input.
Seems like the requirement is 8.5 inch rim width rather than 8.0, but no particular concern about internal diameter (other than being 18 or 19 inch wheels). Is that correct?

Obviously, 18 in. diameter clears the circumference of the calipers. Second thing is not really the width of the wheels but their offset and the shape of the spokes, i.e. whether they contact the "face" of the caliper or not. 18 x 8 wheels will clear the calipers (subject to the shape and thickness of the spokes) if they have smaller offset, say about 25 mm instead of stock 33 mm. On the other hand, 18 in. 8.5 wide aftermarket wheels may not automatically clear the calipers. The most common method to clear the calipers in the cases where the spokes come in contact with the caliper is to install spacers of the required thickness.
