Question 1988 XJ40 VCM Reset Procedure

Hello folks, a number of years ago, I had an almost identical 1988 XJ40 3.6L that would not completely clear the trouble indicators when I pushed the reset button, and someone told me a procedure to hit two different buttons simultaneously and I just can't remember how it was done. Now I have just about the same car, and it's also not letting me clear the codes to start fresh either, it clears them temporarily when you hit the reset, however, an asterisk stays on to the left of the screen, and after it's showing me the customary average fuel readings, etc. etc. , it will go back to the Anti Lock brake warning, and check engine warning. Does anyone here know that trick to clear the codes, sine it doesn't obviously have an OBDII connector to use my scan tool on? Thanks in advance for any help.

Those buttons "reset" etc., have nothing to do with codes, the reset button AFAIK just resets the speedometer trip?

The way you clear codes is by removing the negative battery terminal for about 1/2 a minute. Make sure you have the radio code first though as the radio will need the number code entered or it won't work after the battery disconnect. There is also a fuse in the armrest fuse box that on removal can clear the codes - not sure which one but a quick forum search should tell you.

Thumbs up

Thanks Lawrence, that did the trick, now I hope to be able to see exactly what problems I still have to address as any faults pop back up.
