Default 1990 xj6 wont start transmission light

I have a 1990 XJ6 4.0 motor. Car drove great until last week I got in it and the motor would turn over but would not start. Also the transmission light came on, the oil light and the battery light. I charged the battery and even tried to jump it. I checked the interia switch and that didn't work. Also I'm not getting spark. The car drive fine all of a sudden it won't start I don't know if it's in some form of safe mode or something. Any info on how to fix this would be appreciated thank you

Hi there Joe,

Well first off I wouldn't be too concerned about the tranny light, oil light and battery lights coming on, they always go out after the car starts so if it won't start it's normal for them to stay lit up.

You say you're not getting spark? That could be caused by the crank position sensor failing. One way to see if the sensor is doing its job is to look at the rev counter when you crank the engine. If the rev counter doesn't move, the crank position sensor is suspect.

So check that first then report back, ok?

Thats a classic symptom of a hooped/knackered CPS (crank position sensor) , get a new/used one and you'll be good to go. These things fail without warning.

I THINK your part number is dbc2139, check yourself with your VIN - you can pay a little or a lot for one of these, this place has one for around a hundred bucks and it's a new one ....

JA-DBC2139 - Speed Sensor XJ-40 To VIN 629285 (Mid 1991) LUSEB101

cheers

hey good luck hunting one down, they are easy to fit, just one bolt holds them on.

If you google "xj40 CPS" you'll see this is a pretty common issue on our cars.

Don't forget to come back and let us know when you get up and running again, ok?
