Default '93 just quit...think i figured out,but.... - FIXED

i just got this '93 xj6/xj40 from a friend who gave up on it.He was driving it,stopped switched to reverse,it quit, never started again.all electrical power to ing. dead(windows, radio, lock, seats, etc still worked)was at shop for 5months couldnt figure it out.
i brought it home and found a switch behind the drivers side kick panel ,by firewall, was tripped, reset it and runs fine now...but not sure what caused it or why.any info would be greatly appreciated....also gas tank seems to be over-pressurized(blows gas when removing cap)and gets water in it when rains.thanks for any input.

WOW I guess that you got a steal.

That switch is called the Inertia Switch, a safety device that KILLS the car in the event of an accident.

But it can also trip, due to pot holes, curbs etc. For peace of mind, give your tyres a good inspection. A sidewall blowing out at high speed is worrysome, I know.

Re your over pressure tank, you might have a problem with the fuel pressure relief valve. But I'll leave this to one of our experts.

Welcome aboard BTW.

It is normal to hear a hiss when opening the gas cap. The water issue, do you mean you can see water around the outside of the gas cap? If that's the case, use your finger to go around the outside of the cap, there is a hole there that the water should drain from. It may be clogged.

it hisses when cap is removed, but also squirts gas out, unless open real slow...the water drain seems to be clear, but still seems to fill compartment faster than can drain when it rains....

The drain hose might either be plugged up with leaves as they get in there,or it might be crimped somewhere along its path. When clean water flows out quite fast.To clean nine ai used a brazing rod (rounded out on the end) and ran it down and pushed the gunk out of the tube.
