Default ABS Question on a 88 Vanden Plas

Hi Guys,

New to the forum, but very passionate about my jag; she is a 1988 XJ6 Vandem Plas, with 62,000 miles and a Champagne exterior. She was a daily driver from 1988 - 1995, at which point my father retired her and she was left sitting in the garage for the next bunch of years.. I have been taking her to a mechanic over the last year and getting all of the kinks worked out and i am happy to say she is fully drivable now, except the ABS is not working correctly / at all.

If anyone has any ideas on what could be wrong with the ABS i am all ears.

Thanks guys!

Hi Jag88

You will more likely get an answer by moving this post to the XJ40 forum. This is for cars 2004-on which are totally different to yours.

I think I am correct in saying your car has a very unconventional braking system with a pressure reservoir, and this may be the problem.

Do you have specific warning lights? What's the exact problem? Leaking fluid? Hard pedal?

Thank you for moving the post*

When started up a warning light says ABS failure.

No leaking fluids or hard petal, the ABS simply does not kick in. Under normal braking circumstances everything works, but extreme braking on the highway the steering locks up / abs does not kick in.

Thanks in advance!

Little bit of research and a common problem for the ABS says it could be the "overcharge relay" in the trunk. No luck finding the part for sale online, does anyone happen to know if the part goes by another name or..?

Thanks!

They call it an Over Voltage Relay. They are usually very easy to fix. Pop the cover off and you can generally see the broken relay solder joints. Resolder the joints and the ABS will be happy again. There is also an itty bitty 8 amp glass fuse that sometimes blows.
I have run across very few I couldn't fix.

I am having this problem with my '89 VDP. Can you or someone tell me where I can find this itty bitty 8amp fuse? A part number or? It is smaller in diameter than a normal glass fuse. Thanks

After a little research I know the size is 5mmX20mm, 8 amp
But I need the ratings: Voltage, Blow rate?
I want to try to make sure I replace it with the correct one.
Thanks

It's a 12 volt fuse, any quick blow type will suffice. If it continues to blow, the Zener Diode on the board may be shorted.

Happy hunting!
