Air Intake

Air Intake
I recently purchased this air intake system for my car. When installing it, I noticed the directions stated to be sure to remove a hose from the bottom of the air filter box. Then later about this same hose going to the mass airflow sensor. Thing is, where I think this goes in the sensor is sealed off with silicone. On the air filter box, where I think the hose attaches, there's a cap on it. So there was never a hose, aside from the one that came with the intake.
Out of curiosity, I removed the silicone to see what was in there, just a hex screw, then sealed it back up as it was. My question is, what is the purpose of this hose? Is it needed? From the looks of it, I've never had the hose and the car has been fine. So should I attached it? Hose doesn't even fit the opening on the sensor so I would have to find a larger hose for the job.

I make superchargers for old jags if anyone is interested, what that look like is a big opening with a filter stuck on the end of it, mine supercharger puts the air filter housing under compression, even has a blow off valve so it can fine tuned to suit and for about the same price as you bought your rig for.

Since I never had it, I assume its not needed. I was just curious of its purpose. Or even if not meant for my car at all, I'm still curious of the little hose's purpose.
