Default alternative fuel pump

Hi all, pump is not delivering sufficient pressure. Can I just install one inline, without doing anything else, or what is involved ?.......Roger.

Roger:
Sorry, I've been away for a while. What year is your car? Based on your question, I'm guessing '91 onwards... I've never heard about anyone adding an additional fuel pump to a car with a pump in the tank. And I'm guessing your question stems from not wanting to pull the tank for a proper pump renewal. Perhaps one of the techs will have a definitive answer. Meanwhile, I'm wondering if you've done a few of the basics: fuel pressure test, fuel filter change, fuel pressure regulator...
cheers!
Scott

Hi Scott, Sorry I left out the basic information. Yes, 1993 VDP, I'm thinking of avoiding the 'tank pulling' joyful experience. Pressure at the rail is little more than a dribble, allowing the car to idle but nothing more.....Roger.

Roger,

In a word, NO.

The fuel has NO way of getting OUT of the tank without that pump pumping it out. There is NO provision for a "gravity feed" from the tank, and to fit one would require the tank being OUT of the car, so nothing gained.

The tank out is not that bad, it looks worse than it is, and YES, many things need removing to do so, but it is methodical.

I had the X300 one out in about 2 hours the first time, and MOST of that was getting the DUMB fuel lines out of the bottom of the tank. The second time (new pump was noisy), it took less than 1 hour all done.

Hi Grant, OK, out it comes then. That I'd just filled it up doesn't help but, it's gotta be done........Roger.

Before going to the trouble of removing the tank I would replace the fuel filter, and check that the fuel lines are flowing freely.

if the current pump provides almost adequate flow and pressure, by adding an online pump now you allow your in-tank pump to pump against 14.7 psi negative pressure rather than 42 psi positive pressure required by the pressure regulator.
this difference of 55 psi will increase your pump output by about 50%
if the in-tank pump is a turbine pump .
