Hi KC7stw,
I would implore the moderators NOT to delete your thread because your experience and solution are exactly what this forum is all about. You're not the last person who will have this problem, and just because the solution turned out to be simple doesn't mean it won't help someone else in the future. Thanks for posting this!
Cheers,
Don
Agree with Don. I had no idea an XJ40 would do that. Now we know. My '98 makes a frightful beep, though, when you but touch the shift lever without your foot on the brake. …Not that I've made that mistake…
After reading your post I decided to go try that out on mine.....
I stated the car and then pushed the gear lever not quite into park and turned it off..... no warning sounds......
pushed it into park and started the car again this time leaving it in D and turned it off.... still no sounds or warnings....
Of course the car would not start whilst park was not engaged.... but even trying to start it... I get no sounds or warnings.

Hey Don, unlike some other forums, we never delete 'help or shared experience' threads.
Even simple self help solutions are valuable.
My old XJ40 was also prone to beeping, generally down to a low batt charge.
Red, mine also started in 'N'.

It scared me.. I shut the car off, and it was beeping for about 20 seconds. Like it was very angry at me...
Then I tried to start it.. All the dash gauges, the belts, etc came to life. As it was beeping rapidly at me. Turn the key, and nothing....
When I ran into the house and posted this. Thinking it had something to do with the old security system. On my drive home I had pushed the light button on the trip computer trying to figure out what it turned on.. So that was my reason for thinking the security system had engage.
For some other reason, I shifted the car into reverse, and back to park. The beeping stopped and it started with the next try...
If I can recreate the sounds, I will post a youtube video if it helps someone else.
This might have something to do with the display next to the mileage reading. It will light up if it is in drive, and go out.. if I tap the shifter, the dash indicator comes back on.
Then again.. at 233k miles... I can't complain on the shape it is in, and how it runs.

Sounds like you may need to do an adjustment on the linear switch located under the ski slope. I doubt the display light button on the VCM has anything to do with it, other than being a coincidental activity when the other symptoms showed themselves.
If you have a Haynes manual read up on that section, then post your questions before you start, if you have any.

Seeing he is into restoring cars, and has a lot more tools and a lift. I try and take advantage and get as much done as I can while I visit.
Granted if we could stop talking cars, and get some work done.
