RE: Driver's outside door handle - limp?
well hey i have to say you're SOL with the door handle...the XJ40s door handles were made outta some crappy material called "pot metal" I believe and were VERY prone to break. I have a 93 XJ40 and had ALL SORTS of problems with my driver door handle, had it replaced and it broke a few weeks later then I had it replaced at no cost the 2nd time. The prices are also VERY expensive for them, I searched everywhere and the cheapest new one I found was 295 and thats what I ended up paying. Theres no qucik fix for it either once it goes it is unfortantely gone...I also had my passanger front door go as well when I first bought the car a few years back. I must say it was an absolute joy climbing through the passenger side until I got funds for the driver handle...as soom as you hear any of the handles making a more snap noise when there's no smoothness when lifting the handles anymore that's usually a bad sign that it could go anytime.
i can only imagine people looking at me saying..."wow what a tool look what he has to do and he drives a Jag!" haha.
Hope this helps a little! I can try to look back and see where I ended up getting my door handle if ya end up having to do it soon.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Yep I'm definitely going to have to fix this, as I think Im going to drive this car a bit, tired of seeing it just sit in the garage. Put under 50 miles on it since I purchased.
The handle its self lifts up fine, and is not broken externally, it must be internally, where it connects to the rod. I wonder if I can perhaps weld the pot-metal together?
Also, was wondering where the plug for the car cover is located, for the factory alarm cord? I've looked all over the front end and can't seem to find it.
Also, how hard is it to find a replacement factory chrome wire Jaguar wheel? 15 inch.
Thanks

If it still feels like there is spring tension on the handle when you lift it, you may be in luck. Don't buy anything 'till you have a look inside. The plastic bellcrank may have come off the door latch plate, or the door latch arm may have broken off. You can private message me if you need more info...the handles are not that expensive or hard to change, but you have to swap over the lock barrel. The latch assy is a royal pain if you were that unlucky, but it happens.

HI all.
Well my door handle is broken.
Does anyone know where I could find a USED, or NEW, good condition driver front door handle for 1991 XJ40? Used will work! xkreal@aol.com

When we first bought my 93 on ebay it had this problem, but the owner replaced it before we took delivery, and it worked great for 2 years. now the problem is coming back on the rear doors. I noticed it seems worse when it's hot out, which seems wierd to me. It's an on and off problem, but im assuming it will only get worse

yea when your door handles feel like theyre "snapping" sound or the lever doesnt smoothly pull up I believe thats when your up s@$#ts creek! Both my front ones were replaced and my rear driver side door handle sounds horrible when I open it. Im just waiting for the day the last pop it makes and then no more door. haha. Good thing I dont allow ppl to ride in the backseats!
