Fuel Pulsation Damper

Fuel Pulsation Damper
Hi JAG-friends,
My XJ40 4.0 Sovereign from 1990 has an faulty fuel pulsation damper, this is the part (CBC2581 / EBC9811):
http://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk/part/CBC2581
Diagnostic done with stethoscope and with the document from Jaguar:
Jaguar Workshop Manuals > Majestic L6-3.6L (1989) > Powertrain Management > Fuel Delivery and Air Induction > Fuel Pressure Pulsation Damper > Component Information > Technical Service Bulletins > Customer Interest for Fuel Pressure Pulsation Damper:
The question is, is this part essential or can I just change the fuel-line without the damper?
Or can I change the fuel-line with a damper from Bosch?
Maybe there is some JAG-driver who has some experience with this part.
It is not a catastrophic problem but a bit annoying to here the strange "helicopter"-sound at idling.
Thanks for tips and tricks.
Bye from Austria
Zsolti

Hi Zsolti,
Our fellow member sarc recently dealt with the same problem. See his thread and resolution here:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-noise-135107/
I don't know how critical the damper is or if the engine would perform properly without it. If you could find a similar damper from Bosch you could probably replace it, but my assumption is that you would also want to replace the rubber section of your fuel hose, as hardening of the rubber is probably at least partially responsible for the transmission of sound into the passenger compartment. It might even be that you could use your original damper and just replace the rubber section of the hose assembly. I can't recall whether anyone has tried that.
As far as I know, the complete hose assembly is only available from Jaguar. In the U.S., jaguarmerriamparts.com sells Jaguar parts at discounted prices, but I don't know if there is a European equivalent. Perhaps some of our other members will know.
Please keep us informed.
Cheers,
Don

About 25 years ago I had a lady customer that thought there was a helicopter following her because the pulse damper had failed. I laughed and told her what the problem was and quoted here a price to repair.
She told me that it was not worth the money just for the noise but thanked me anyway!!!!
Thanks for reminding me of the days when I worked on the XJ40s everyday.

Thanks for the answers. Yes I read it too that the sound is not the damper directly but the damper can't do "his" job because of the harden fuel-line.
@Bob:
The same as I say it is not worth the money, I could by a new one in Germany for 400 Euros incl. taxes and shipment. I think that is too much money for about 70cm fuelline and damper and an "only" annoying failure.

I got my hose used here in the US for $175. For me it was worth that amount to get rid of the annoying noise.
Interestingly, the noise was less annoying once I was sure what it was....... I think it was the "not knowing what the noise was" part that was actually the worst.
As you could guess, I didn't expect or see any performance change before and after.
