Green Goo Gone!

Green Goo Gone!
Well the weather warmed up enough today, time to lose the HSMO system under the hood on champ car. With the rear shocks converted there is no sense keeping the mileage-sucking hydraulic pump and the rest of the bits that go with it.
Fairly straightforward job, suck out the tank, pull it out of the way,and you are better off to cut the hoses rather than risking busting off the tank fittings!
Two screws hold the coil down, just get it out of the way of the "why?" hose
Snip the offending hoses off,but mind there is a screw holding the hose st the front by the pump.
Also mind your paint! This stuff can be hard on paint.
Three bolts hold the pump on,10mm wrench, sneak by the fan,it will come out.Under the car, undo the return line to drain the goo from the radiator cooling tank, wait to drain(drink beer)
I just snipped the rubber mounts for the valve, will remove the base later.
Replace the supply hose with 5/8 hydraulic return line,3 ft.,6 bucks.
Re-use the hose clamps, wipe up spills, clean and inspect coil grounds, etc.
Leave off the return hose, and fit a length of temporary hose into a catch pan, fill with ATF,and start er up.
I used a jack under the car to remove some of the weight on the front wheels(tiny wife)
Flush the system out, crank the wheel left and right to remove air from the system
Button it up,admire work, drink beer!
The growling is GONE!

tank surgury
Well,it has been a year since I deleted the SLS on this car,and it performs well.
Love the KYB setup in back, great controll, but noticed the other day the tank
formerly housing the mineral juice started valdeezing ATF all over the fender well!
Pulled the tank out today, and the seam at one corner of the tank let go..
Went to work and carved open the tank, use a very sharp knife and work at it.Took a good hour or so of prying and carving, but I got it open without wrecking the thing!
Got my dremel tool out, machined everything flat(the top half has a warp)and proceeded to pin the tank together with some #6 brass wood screws.
This plastic holds a screw quite well, but you have to pre-drill first.
I took out some of the baffles in the upper half while I was in there, and reassembled with polypropylene epoxy.
I hope this will hold, gonna try it out tonite!
Just thought I would share this with everyone.
Cheers as usual,Jim and Cindy.

If at first......Don't argue!
Took a look,and yup.Epic Fail!
Removed the tank again, did not see any cracks or other leak points,so I removed the screws and Yikes!
The top half came away without a fuss at all!Poly-epoxy must be the wrong product.
Cleaned everything up,and tried good old PL premium adhesive instead.
I really hope this works.Oh well,it's raining buckets,a good day to sit by the fire and ponder, drink beer, and let the glue set up.
Hope this works.
Should I be using power steering fluid instead of ATF?
Cheers all,Jim

PL might be just the thing Jim, sure is sticky etc ..failing that, sikaflex might be up next (or have a new tank made up in metal?)
anyways, good luck, I hear the Malahat has snow today so no cruise up island for me this weekend mate!
cheers

Only the SLS cars shared the PAS reservoir for convenience and the suspension used the HSMO. I guess the PAS rack is not 'picky' as to the hydraulic fluid used.
DEXRON is more cost effective than HSMO or PAS fluid so I would stick with it.
I converted my 1992 XJ40 to DEXRON when I deleted the SLS. I also had the NON-SLS PAS reservoir without the added return hose (that was ordered by mistake for someone by the parts dept so I got it CHEAP) that I installed in place of the SLS unit.
When I did conversions from SLS I would simply 'cap' the return port on the reservoir and flush DEXRON through the PAS system.

Frankentank!
Sorry so late getting back, but what I ended up doing was using up some old epoxy tank coating I had leftover from a job.Mix A with B,stir, reduce, pour, swirl tank for an hour.
After I glued it up and let it cook.
It took the whole of two days to let the mix cure.
Thanks to Bob for his wisdom!
Seems OK for now,
Took pics when missus got home.So far ,,,so good!
NEED TO REPLACE TANK IN FUTURE,yells at self..
Cheers,Jim
