So latly ive been hearing a rather loud humming noise coming formt he gas tank of my 1990 jag xj6 soverign. Just wanna know what the possiblities of the noise could be? onyl does it when the vehicle is running and started to do it about 2 weeks ago. Is my fuel pump going out?

 

Fuel pump is not in the tank on a 1990 model. That started in 91.5. Perhaps a musical midget was stuffed in there by mischievous kids in the neighborhood? Seriously, do you hear venting when you release the gas cap?

 

Fuel pump is on the RH frame rail just before the rear tire.

 

The tank was hot to the touch and i knwo the humming sound was comign from it because when i put ym hand on it i could feel it. sometimes when i open the gas cap at first it makes a suckign noise.

 

The only electrical component there is the sending unit for the 1990 model. You maybe building pressure, but I don't think that would give you noise.
