Welcome to the forum, Craig!
Unfortunately, you've missed the proper forum by just a smidge. Absolutely gorgeous car, but it's the immediate predecessor of the X300 (I think)
FWIW, the 4.0L front seal, found in the X300 is accessible directly behind the crank damper, without disturbing the timing cover. Wait for Bob to see this one, he knows for certain, or for a mod to move you to the proper sub-forum. There was always a round headlight version of the XJ40, it was only the sovereign and Daimler variants which had the rectangular lights. May differ in export markets.
Reverting to the seal, it can be changed without removing the timing cover.
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us!
That is an absolutely stunning Jaguar! The factory project code is XJ40, so I have moved your thread here from the forum for the X300. Here you will find knowledgeable owners of similar cars.
As countyjag stated, the front crankshaft oil seal is replaceable without removing the timing cover, but you do have to remove the crankshaft pulley/harmonic damper. Here's the parts diagram showing the crank seal, Part 10 in the diagram below. You may also want to replace the intermediate shaft seal, Part 9, while you're at it.
You can see this diagram and the part identifications and part numbers at this link:
