Welcome to the forum, Craig!
Unfortunately, you've missed the proper forum by just a smidge. Absolutely gorgeous car, but it's the immediate predecessor of the X300 (I think)
FWIW, the 4.0L front seal, found in the X300 is accessible directly behind the crank damper, without disturbing the timing cover. Wait for Bob to see this one, he knows for certain, or for a mod to move you to the proper sub-forum. Speaking of moderators, make sure you've posted an intro in the new members section, and read & heed the forum rules and guidelines there so you will be well-launched on the path to full membership!

Again, beautiful car!

How much you want for that

Year ?

From my understanding the last year or so of the X40 production changed to a round headlight lens

There was always a round headlight version of the XJ40, it was only the sovereign and Daimler variants which had the rectangular lights. May differ in export markets.
Reverting to the seal, it can be changed without removing the timing cover.

Hi Craig,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us!

That is an absolutely stunning Jaguar! The factory project code is XJ40, so I have moved your thread here from the forum for the X300. Here you will find knowledgeable owners of similar cars.

As countyjag stated, the front crankshaft oil seal is replaceable without removing the timing cover, but you do have to remove the crankshaft pulley/harmonic damper. Here's the parts diagram showing the crank seal, Part 10 in the diagram below. You may also want to replace the intermediate shaft seal, Part 9, while you're at it.

You can see this diagram and the part identifications and part numbers at this link:

Please do visit the New Member Area - Intro a MUST and post a required introduction so we can learn something about you and your Jaguar and give you a proper welcome.

Cheers,

Don

So yes, as the lads above said, pretty car!

Take off the belts and then undo and remove the crank damper/harmonic balancer, seal is right there underneath.

To remove the harmonic balancer, here's how I did it.

Joe has some great tips also with his youtube vid apart from the fact that the threads in the crank damper are not metric.

Your car looks like an earlier model than mine and Joe's (94's) so you won't have electric fans maybe

cheers

Larry
