Default High Mounted Stop Lamp

I've just re-attached my HMSL after driving round with it on the back shelf for a week or two and enduring a bright red interior every time I hit the brakes!

I used 3M RP45 VHB tape to re-attach the unit, cleaned off the attachment points and swabbed them with an alcohol wipe before attaching tape. I don't know how long it will last, but it seems pretty good at the moment.

One thing I don't understand is how the unit's cover is removed to get access to the bulbs?

Hi Larry,

It's been a long time since I did this, but my recollection is that the entire lamp slides upward and off of the mounting tabs that are adhered to the backlight glass, and then there is a small release catch, either at the ends or on the bottom edge, that you somehow depress or something to get the cover to pull off of the lamp assembly. Sorry I can't remember in any greater detail.

If you figure it out and have time to post some photos, you'll help others down the road.

Cheers,

Don

Hi Don - I noticed the two buttons(?) on each side the bottom of the unit when I was attaching it - but wasn't sure if the housing moved "back" or "up" to detach the cover.

As the thing looked like it was going to stick, didn't want to pull one way or another in case I pulled it off again!

Looks like a fairly haywire design using two small tab attachment points to secure a rather large unit to the back window ...although I shouldn't complain, the original stickum lasted 26 years!

Cheers

Larry
