I own a Jaguar XJ40 4.0 1993, American Version, VIN finishing in 675945.
Lately, the fuel pump has been making a buzzing noise. It used to start only after I drove it for about 20 miles, and it was a low noise. Now, it starts immediately once I start the car, and the buzzing is much louder. Also, when I take the car from my garage it has to go down a small slope, and the engine stutters and usually dies. I have to turn on the car at least a couple of times. Once the car is on flat ground, then it runs normal.
Just a few days ago, I ran the car on the highway to about 120 MPH, just to check if there were any fuel pump issues. The car ran great, but the buzzzing noise was even louder.
I think that I have to change the fuel pump....Can my Esteemed Colleagues suggest a good brand? I had the fuel pump changed in the past, but the car did not run for 3 years, due to Covid. I just have had it painted and renewed .But that buzzing sound started much before the car was not ran for those 3 years. I had just forgotten about that fact.
Hi, this is the one I bought, the OE is a Walbro and this Carter pump uses the Walbro at its heart. Some pumps are similar but the brass intake fitted is too thick to fit into the top of the canister.
This Carter is what I would recommend. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...t=6256&jsn=428
Thank you so much for taking your time to my answer my issues. I did study your old post carfully, was surprised that so many jaguar owners complain about the pump noise!
My Mechanic here in Portugal just advised me to turn on the Stereo!
How high do you turn up the radio to not hear the pump?
Pedro,
How is the battle with the fuel pump? I also had to search the archives and saw photos of the canister and the fragile "donut". Be careful working in the tight handhole disconnecting fuel lines.
Also read up on the "C" clip for disconnecting pipes that enter the tank from under the car, as they are at arms length and hard to see. It is doable and mine has been great ever since.

Dear Proquest,
Thank you so much for your follow up! I have followed your Suggestion and have bought the Carter P7222...But from the US, unbelievable as it may sound, could not find it almost anywhere in Europe. I did find one, they were charging over EUROS 400....In the US, and with the E-Bay Global shipping program, I have paid around USD 150 delivered to my door step.
So, I have to wait a few weeks before it arrives. When it arrives it will be instaled imediately. Going crazy with the "buzz" from the exisiting fuel pump.
