Default Noisy fuel pump.

When I bought my 2000 XK8 this summer I was driving it home the day I bought it and the fuel pump failed 3 hours into the trip. I got it towed to an Independent shop and got the fuel pump installed for about 450.00. Not too bad I figured. Now I have a high pitched wine coming from the rear of the car you can only hear with the top up. I think it is the fuel pump. Anyone had a noisy pump before? Any Ideas on how to fix it? Thanks David.

From my experience, that sound is normal with most fuel pumps. Step on the gas and you won't hear it anymore.

I have it too. It might be common but I didnt have it before my original pump failed. I do not believe it to be a concern for pump functioning. I put my very lightweight car dustcover in the area where the top goes down and it blocked the noise completely. But that is not a very practical "permanent" solution. Then I put some carpet padding UNDER the carpet in that area where the top goes down. Including up the back of the seat. It helped some. I can only hear the noise at idle. Be careful to get everything back in place where it was or the top can grab an edge of the carpet and stick. The glass is the first thing to go! You might try some "real" automotive sound insulation under there but I had the piece of padding laying around so I went with it.

Actually that is how I have been dealing with it. Those that are faced with replacing the pump in the future may wish to use OEM parts to avoid the issue. David.

Yes, but you would have get the side facing the front of the car, meaning you would have to take the tank out. I tried to do as much as I could without taking all the pipes, fuel lines, and wiring off. It did nothing.

Squirt WD-40 back there to form non-stick surfaces and then shoot expanding foam back there?

The Denso pumps barely hum with the trunk open listening for their operation. Inaudible inside the cabin. XJR though.

I love the creativity and it would probably work. You might end up trading a noise nuisance for a smell for a while though. Its a little more extreme (harder to undo) than I am willing to go for what is a minor nuisance that only occurs at idle for me.

try rockauto.com

here's a few lines from my parts cross reference file:

DENSO FUEL PUMP CROSS REFERENCE

1998-2003 W0133-1841263 (kit)
1995-1998 951-0008 (kit)
1995-1998 950-0183 (pump and strainer) ND1597621 (worldpac)

worldpac catalog W0133-1656589 fuel screen
worldpac catalog W0133-1629980 fuel filter W0133-1681829 (1999-2007 GMC Sierra 1500 Fuel Filter - Bosch - Direct OE replacement )

denso fuel screen 952-0046 (1999 jaguar)

Make sure you check the application because I bought for a XJR which mounts the pump bare in the tank. It does not use that plastic pump module that is found in XK's starting in 20??.

The best value is the kit with strainer included. But, it is harder to find.

On the XJ the pump requires relieving the mounting ring a little bit.

When the vehicle manufacturer lists a part for all years, but the aftermarket lists it for only a few years it is often because the aftermarket fumbled updating their application catalogs.

Okay ... push a clear plastic leaf bag back there and then fill the bag with expanding foam ... instant custom padding

Be careful and go slow because expanding foam can exert a great deal of pressure during expansion. You don't want to end up crushing the tank.

YMMV, at your own risk ... etc

There are two types of foam ... some expand a lot and some not so much. Should be on the aerosol can.

FWIW: My (OEM Replacements from a Jag Dealer) Fuel Pumps are VERY Quiet. With my head inside the trunk (boot) and the Engine Not running, the Pumps are Just Audible when I jumper 12v to them.
