Default Lifting 3.6 with ZF

Hello guys, your experience is needed. I lifted 350sbc with turbo 400 before, but somehow have no good feeling about this.
Would you lift 3.6 with automatic gearbox (both dry)
Or should I split them.
It is 2t crane at 1to setting
TIA!

I think it depends on what I plan to do with either or both....

Should be fine. I have done it multiple times with the 4.0 with zf box, also 2ton lift. No problem.

Its an aluminum block, weight is less than what you would think

Both restore and use, though in different cars.

i purchased an eng/trans unit complete from a wrecking yard. I built a cart to put therm on as a unit and figured they weigh about 850 pounds together in order to get proper wheels for the cart.

Hi Joliette,

I can't tell in the photo how your load leveler is attached to the engine, but it will help if you can attach it in a lengthwise manner that will give you the ability to tilt the front of the engine up as you lift it out, Your hoist looks like a newer version of the one I own, which is perfectly capable of lifting both the engine and transmission together.

Cheers,

Don

Thumbs up

Thank you guys for support, so in the end it was way easier than the dimensions would suggest, the engine is way lighter than diesels I usually have to deal with. So my red one gets a new rebuilt gearbox, my green one gets a new engine and gearbox and they will both be ready for next 40 years of fun.

I fixed the crane on rear exhaust and in front I rotated the engine mount and fixed it on that so it was naturally forward backward balanced and tilting. It touched the engine bay on the front as I was sliding it out, but I removed the grille so it does not get damaged and it needed only slight lift by the gearbox to clear it. I was able to do it with my missing muscles so, weights really not much.

When I will be putting it back, I will move the front attachment to rear engine mount screw (one is enough). I was just too scared seeing the size so as always overdid it.

View from the other side, for future references. Maybe it will help someone.
And yes, crane was not even sweating. Actually when I had the engine on the ground (it looks scary big) I was able to lift one and other side to move it around on the ground. So it really could not be too heavy as I am just a little 53kg girl and muscles just enough to fight gravity.

Leaky exhaust? Sounds very rough.

So the red one got the rebuilt gearbox, right?

How is the green one coming along?

yes.
The green one now sits outside, waiting until I have time to rebuild the engine and the gearbox. I do not really rush it, want to make a video about both and have many others to drive. So will be more like mild general restoration of the whole car. It was ok, just having 20 small things getting on my nerves especially after I had an accident with it..

I was going to see if anybody mentioned disconnecting the engine from the transmission and lifting it straight up. I discovered that I could pull my XJ8 engine from the side which came in handy since I didn't have anybody around to help to remove the hood.

I'm very intrigued by your workshop photos. I don't think I could get away with having glass nearly floor to ceiling all the way around like that. I'm too clumsy. But I like it. Looks good!

If i was only after engine, I would probably do that, but I wanted to rebuild both engine and gearbox anyway. But removing engine with hood on? That must be something.
Removing hood from XJ8 is not that difficult, you can close it on a foam (i used a camper mattress), unbolt it and then lift it up, it is very light.

From red one i took out only gearbox, just lifted the car up on jack-stands and dropped the gearbox on a creeper (it survived).

And thank you, I love my workshop, was a life long dream to have something like that and love the features it has compared to regular workshops. Now I am still searching something bigger, as pure business decision, but will not be without a compromise very likely.
