Lots of Vibration

Lots of Vibration
My Jag is an 89' XJ6 which has problems with intense vibrations at higher speeds. When the car is idling, its nice and quiet. Under 40, nice and quiet. Past 40, gets a ton of vibration throughout the whole vehicle which mostly seems to happen during acceleration. The previous owner reported the same problem and attributed it to "loose rag bolts," I don't know which ones he is talking about since it could be any of them. Tonight I went out to get new tires and my mechanic informed me that my front bearings on both sides needed to be replaced. I was curious if it was more likely the "rag bolts" or the fact that the bearings need to be replaced (the mechanic also couldn't to an alignment until the bearings were replaced). Either way I have to fix it soon since I have a 400 mile drive coming up on sunday! any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I have never heard of rag bolts, but I have a guess what they might be. Some mechanics, both amateur and professional, look down at the floor after they have finished cobbling a car back together. Unsure of where all the leftovers go, they collect all the "extra" hardware, wrap it up in a rag, and throw it in the trunk.
If you have a problem with loose ragbolts, it is because they are rolling around in your trunk and not holding your car together. Like the ones for the driveshaft center support bracket, for instance.
Vibrations you feel, noises you hear, and sometimes you get both. If you feel vibration through the steering wheel, something's wrong in the front of your car. If you hear a change in sound when you steer the car left and right, that's usually from the front. Both of those are symptoms of bad front wheel bearings. That's as much of a response as I can come up with from your input. If you trust your mechanic, let him tell you what is wrong with your car.

It could be i missaligned propshaft or a bad Jurid disc. I had this problem whith my XJ40 92 model after lowering the suspension the angles of the driveshaft werent good so i had some vibrations around 80km/h If i had chimsed them out a bit to get the Camber angle right it would have gone away but it didn´t bother me so much so i didn´t do it
