Default No Brakes

Hey guys.. I have an 88 xjs with major brake issues.. I have pressure at the pedal but I'm not getting any stopping power at the wheels.. The issue started off with a leaking master cylinder at the rubber seals. I changed those and it seems the booster went out so I changed that as well.. I've bled the lines a few times and still have the same issue.. Does anyone know of a way to change the hydraulic booster over to a vacuum style booster as I'm fed up with the leaks and now this.. I saw something on line but at $375 for a mail order kit I think I'll inquire here for help and answers.

Hi goodgame,

I have moved your post from the forum for the XJ40 to the forum for the XJ-S. Here you'll find knowledgeable owners of similar cars who will be able to offer assistance in resolving your braking issues.

Cheers,

Don

Hi

Could you go into more detail, what you mean about a leak in the rubber seals.

Do you mean the Callipers or have you been taking the Valve Block off the Master Cylinder Actuator?

Before you go any further, could you provide a few pics, so we can get a better idea of what might have gone wrong.

If I had to take a guess and its only a guess at this stage, then it could be loss of pressure in the Accumulator.

Which is the thing that looks like a black 'Tennis Ball' which sits on top of the Pump.

Don't try and undo this, as its under very high pressure and you might easily kill yourself if you don't know what you are doing.

A new one of these is about $300 but you 'may' be able to find a firm who refills them.

In any event it might not be this although it has all the hallmarks of a Hard brake pedal with no Brakes.

I've had numerous Brake Failures on different XJS's and even I was thinking of changing to Vacuum Servo, except I think I've managed to fix it at last!

Although its not too difficult to Change to Vacuum Servo, you could have a problem with your Insurance Company.

Everything would be OK until you had an Accident, in which case your Insurance Company may decide to disown you and leave you to pick up the Tab.

Also you might have a problem with an MOT type test, if your Car is supposed to be fitted with ABS.

Which were the reasons why I decided to fix what I'd got.

So if you could give more details as well as a few pics, then I'm sure that this Forum will be able to help you fix the problem.

goodgame,

Hi, I assume from the description of the work you've done that you've got an XJ6 rather than an XJS? The XJ6 (XJ40) had the power servo whereas the XJS had a traditional vacuum-driven servo before it went to an ABS system without a traditional servo.

If I'm wrong, I apologise. If I'm right, perhaps reposting in the XJ40 area will elicit some help?

Good luck

Paul

So you need to go back to the XJ40 section then!

Hi goodgame,

It will help avoid future confusion if you will use your User Control Panel to add your car's year, model and engine information, and just to be really clear, add the Jaguar factory project code XJ40.

To access your Control Panel, hover your cursor over your user name in the right lower corner of the blue banner at the top of this page (not your user name that appears below that near the word "Welcome"). In the dropdown menu click on the first option, User CP. In your control panel, look in the left column for "Edit Signature."

Now, back to your brakes. I don't know what to tell you about your current issues given all the work you've done, but you may find the information from ptjs1 (Paul) in the thread below interesting:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...needed-145154/

Regarding the vacuum conversion, I don't know how many members of the Jaguar Forums have done it, but several members of the Jag-Lovers XJ40 forum have done it with success, but I don't know of anyone who has done it for less than the cost of the conversion kit. You might search the forum here and also at jag-lovers.org (you'll need to join, but it's free and there's a wealth of XJ40 info there, including many of my XJ40 phototutorials).

Cheers,

Don
